Like others have said, if you're on Mac, you'll be set with FCPX.

For Windows, it's Adobe Premiere or Avid.
 
AVID is and frequently taught in conjunction with a college degree in film. To me, its the dinosaur in the room

Final Cut is a news/media industry standard. Solid program, but Apple has enough $.

Premiere Pro is an accessible consumer grade solution that will likely fit your needs. Also, it's not a bad idea to familiarize yourself with adobe products - in the future you may want to export different formats between other applications in the adobe master suite.
 
I was a fan of Final Cut for THE longest time, but the recent update is just not stable enough for me to continue working with it, so I've switched to Premier. Steep learning curve, but if you know the basics of video editing it's really easy to get into the flow of things.
If you're looking for a free solution then you could do quite a lot with iMovie. Or, if you're on PC, get the cracked version of some fancy software. They're readily available.
 
I am using Vegas - it get's the job done for the $ that I paid for it.

Camtasia Studio is better than Sony Vegas for me, but both are really good.
 
Sony Vegas is my go to. SOOOO many features for amazing video editing. One downside - steep learning curve. So if you don't mind that then definitely go for it.
 
I personally use Camtasia Studio, as it does support both mac and windows.

This. MAGIX has a lot of similar features/HUD to AVS and if you can learn MAGIX then you'll probably be ready for Sony Vegas or Adobe then.
 
Adobe Premiere is the video editing software, After Effects is a compositing and special effects program. They're not the same, but work together. If you want to do it as a job, then learn Avid, it's industry standard and all major television networks use it. If you just want to throw some videos together for SEO, then just use Sony Vegas Pro, or Lightworks if you want a free option.
 
Sony Vegas Pro i recommended. Easy to use and many features you can use.
 
If you're willing to put out some bucks, Adobe Premiere is really easy to get into and does the job well.
