Have an 11 year old site that for the last 10 years has ranked #1-5 for our all our keywords.

I made the switch to HTTPS since I read that Google was going to favor secure sites of non-secure.

Since I did that the site has completely fallen apart as all backlinks over the last 10 years were to the HTTP version not the new HTTPS version.

I submitted a new Sitemap, using webmaster tools to get Googlebot to fetch.

Site is slowly starting to come back in the SERPS but I'm afraid I can ever get our solid top first page rankings back.

Any ideas or suggestions about what to do when switching a site from HTTP to HTTPS as to not screw up rankings?

Please help :-)

What goes down must come up and that is the case with your site as well.

Just make sure the http version of your site is properly redirecting to https through this link : http://www.redirect-checker.org/

Do right redirect. Be patient, some change need a time to get affect. I was in same situation with you. 16 years old website losing ranks within 4 months after switch to https. What I do just forget all past hardwork (link building with http) and start new with https. After waiting for sometimes the rank is back and still #1 in search for main keyword.

After few weeks ranking will be like in past or better. Time for "come back" for different sites is different. Just wait :)

How long ago did you switch across?

Are we talking days or weeks?

Was a month ago but realized that I never checked the redirection of all pages.

HTTPS wasn't forced on all pages, htaccess has an error as well as my https wordpress plugin

Got it corrected a few days ago.. now its a waiting game... :-)

Hey, I experienced that several times, and in most cases rankings returned on previous level in 6-10 weeks (some improved 1-2 spots), and on 1 site after 3-4 months experienced new boost in traffic (+ 20-30 %). If you are on Wordpress install & activate Really Simple Ssl plugin, this will secure Seo transition to the https version. And, try tp keep calm as much you can :)

Thanks all much appreciated!! :-)

Just hard to have patience when the $$$ is suffering...lol

Is there really 2 different ranking systems for http and https? now i have to go and edit all my googe+ article collection links that i posted?

This actually very common, many high-authority sites have suffered a massive drop after moving to HTTPs. Just make sure to test if the SSL certificate has been properly installed - https://www.ssllabs.com/ssltest/, try to get an A+ score. Fix all the 301 errors, and slowly but surely your rankings and traffic should start to improve.

HTTPS is like any other redirection - it takes time for Google to pick up and count all the redirects, and in the meantime, you can lose rankings/traffic.
