Sudden Ranked Drop? Google Algo Update?

How big was the drop back then? Is the traffic now equal to the beginning of November - like a full recovery? What kind of site is it? Whitehat? Age of the site?How long it took for the sites to bounced back after you've changed the anchor text? Did you force google bot to recrawl the sites (with changed anchor text) to see the change or just let it crawl it naturally?

3-4 days. I let it all crawl naturally. Same for all 5 sites.
Thank you, I was asking because I see something weird that I've never seen. Basically my ranking didn't change, I checked them using different services and they pretty much lineup, however, I lost impression and clicks, the only thing I can think that is causing this is links that I build a couple of months ago with money anchor but removed them a couple of days ago. Hope that'll help.

I changed my exact match KW's to brand, worked a treat. Remember, I was recovering from the November update, couple of days before Black Friday, not December.
I did very well in November and December, was hit on January 7th.

I have an affiliate site..... great content, "light gray hat" links but barely enough of them to trigger anything. Searching for my domain (site:domain.com) has results down to 12 pages, even though Google says "about 86 results".
Mobile usability in search console has this site down to 2 valid pages. 0 errors though! I've gone through and tested a lot of pages using the mobile usability checker and it's very inconsistent. Click refresh 10 times and get 10 different results. A lot of the time there is an "Other error" on resource loads. Doing some research tells me this is usually a robots.txt issue (not present on my site) or a crawl budget issue.
Every other mobile usability tester around (Bing, Merkle, etc) works fine and browsing on phone is no problem.
Mobile speed (experimental) has temporarily been slow (web host issues), but also shows a decline in pages from January 7. Desktop speed shows the same decline in pages from January 7 onwards.
The weird thing is, Coverage is supposedly business as usual:
But as another poster said, they are "Valid, Indexed, not submitted in sitemap" (these pages are definitely in the sitemap).
If I have to guess it seems this pre-update (Jan 7) brings more ranking drops to non-mobile friendly sites. At the same time, some Googlebot-mobile crawlers are having trouble rendering JS, or crawl budgets are 95% less than they used to and causing issues. Or I'm completely wrong. It's probably the last one.
Yep, we have the same problem. If you search for a sentence of your content in quotation marks do you also find that people have copied your content all over the web?
I don't know if the problem is with Googlebot mobile crawlers, but it could be. Weird though that it seems that this issue isn't very widespread it seems. When you search for it you don't see all that many people talk about it. I wonder why it only affects certain people and not others.

I had 2 sites which were deindexed ( only ranking pages were deindexed) on january 7th. Surprisingly one page from one site I got back and it is ranking again but some spot lower than before on 1st page. on Other site no change. I have done nothing to make it happen.

What happens when you use the Mobile Usability Tool on 10 of your pages? Are they all mobile friendly? If they aren't what errors are they giving?

Oh, that is great you bounced back, Interesting about the anchor texts but it can't be a coincidence if all 5 bounced back. I wonder if I should look at the anchors internally as well just in case?
1 of my sites bounced back the other day the other bigger one has not as yet, but the last time they bounced back was roughly a week between them so i am waiting to see if it follows the same pattern. Will keep you posted.
Thanks for updating me, if this does not come back like the last time I will try and follow what you did.

One of my clients sites was hammered in November/December. Went from most main keywords in top 10 to 100+. It's mostly white hat with very few backlinks. Guess I'll have to be a little more aggressive. It's a local site, so it looks like it was affected by November "Bedlam" Google update.

Today, my site passes all tests. It's been in decline since Jan 8, so even if everything is perfect I expect it will be at least a week to see any effects.
