how do you rank with stories? is it the same with the feed?

Great to bring that to people's attentions. You should definitely be using them, but hitting the explore page with one is no easy task.

Long story short, yes.
It won't be that hard, if you know what to do ( :
Will test a few things, give you update.
To be honest, I don't know.
My personal account gets almost all updates immediately.
I've seen this feature on my device for a few weeks now.

This screenshot is for people what say stories are useless:
Instagram is pushing stories AF.
If you are not using stories, it's like sharing posts without highly targeted hashtags.

A few months back stories were able to trend, but the function disappeared for a while until they re-designed the whole explore niche into these sectors.
Now, you frequently see trending stories in your explore page.
But "more" important is, that even on your main start page the stories of the person you followed "can trend".
If you got a shadowban, you're not posting stories actively or you're bounce rate / in general story quality drops (thus people not being as interested as you once were), your stories are moving more and more to the right corner and not even your followers will see your stories (unless they watch all stories, which isn't common).
So, in my opinion, it's more important to first focus on your followers interests and to keep them glued to your stories and then to worry about trending with your stories
