Spam score high on a new domain?

Hey guys,

I recently created a new website for my marketing agency and used the Moz chrome extension to see what my spam score was.
It's at 39%... Im so confused as to why it's so high? I only just created it?
Does it matter anyway? Or will Google penalise me?

Moz Spam Score is almost completely useless as a metric - it's just an onsite score (nothing to do with backlinks etc) that shows a percentage of sites with similar features to your site that they found to be penalized or banned by Google - things such as affiliate links, domain length, meta keywords, mostly random stuff that really doesn't matter.
 
So, does the domain have any other history? As in, is it possible someone else had created the domain prior, spammed with it & just never renewed?

Moz Spam Score is generally independent of Google anyway. Meaning it really only means something to Moz.

I don't think Google factors in spam score's from Moz.

It's high because your domain got spammed. It's as simple as that.
Yes it matters if you gonna sell your website or domain later. 1st thing people do is do moz domain analysis. Also you will have hard time getting guest post or selling guest post.
No google penalty for it.
 
Did you look at it on archive dot org to see if it had consistent history and no idle period where archive bot was blocked and it might have been used to spam with?
 
Spam score is just an indication of the quality of domain and website based on the quality of links it has got. It appears that your website has lot many spam links from poor quality domain that caused the spam score to hike. Many times it is not in the hands of the webmaster to control this. But you can try to remove as many as possible by contacting the other site owners if possible. (I tried to do it in my case but wasn't that successful).

And do not worry, Google will not penalize you for this.

It's a new website. I found a couple links from the previous domain owner on Moz
 
It's just a MOZ score which is nothing related to Google. But if you created it for selling guest posts or selling backlinks then its matters. Also some guest post providers wont give backlinks for your site if your spam score is high. But completely irrelevant to Google.

Thanks for responding! No, I dont plan on selling my domain so that not a problem, however I didn't know it affects guest posting :/ do you know how to fix it?

I think those couple sites has moderate spam score so that you have 35+ spam score. try to point to low spam score linking domains
