So to play devil's advocate, for my own learning purposes, if i couldn't build PBN or Guest post links, what would i do?
Mate, if you don't have a budget of at least a few K, don't do SEO. Best advice you will get here all day.
You're competition is more important to look at than your monthly searches. But assuming the competition is low, no. On my current project I'm ranked 56th on a low competition KW with 10,000 monthly searches. I've only invested $60. The way it's been climbing I don't think I'll have to put in more than another $100. So no, you don't need a huge budget for low competition.Lol. I can spend a few K as long as I see it coming back at some point. I don't really fancy wasting it.
I'm targeting the casino industry which is a little oversaturated, and so i'm only targeting KW's with about 500 monthly searches at the moment. Should I really be spending hundreds to rank for those theoretically not too hard terms?

You can be sure that the keyword either doesn't have 10K search volume or the commercial intent there is minimal, thus the low competition. But it's quite a difference between #56 and top 3.
Still, I am out of this thread, I helped you more than you are willing to take into account.
I'm listening to everything that you are saying. I'm just getting a bit of a sense of doom and gloom. A lot of what i'm doing wrong and what not to do, and not a lot of how to put it right.
In a sense the old 2.0 method is dead but web 2.0s are still a crucial component to link building. Just not hundreds of them. The idea is to create a handful of web 2.0s but make them high quality. Handwritten lengthy content, images, multiple pages, updated periodically with new content. Then you juice them up with tier 2 and 3 links. 25 Web 2.0s on the top platforms is more than enough for most keywords. I'm currently using 10. However, PBN's and Guest Posting are still king in SEO and probably will be for a long time. But you don't always need premium high price PBN posts to rank. You can get cheap, somewhat risky PBNs and run them through your 2.0s. Or you can make your own PBN. Takes some time but once it's built you have your own PBN that nobody is posting on but you. There's multiple guides here on how to create a PBN.And do you agree that you need to use PBN's and guest posts, and that the old 2.0 method is dead?
Depends what you mean by commercial intent but the search volume is definitely accurate. There's no good way to sell a product through my keyword but that's fine because I don't sell products to my traffic. no i dont,So you believe that if google de indexes a page it still credits the flow of juice?
Don't forget that it's google that attributes the juice in the first place!
