And well, it got me thinking. So one of our clients wanted me to investigate an issue they had with a customer.

The customer came in and presented a printed off deal like the kind you buy online from groupon, livingsocial, etc. The issue being that well... my customer had never offered a coupon through the site listed on the printout.

So my train of thought:
Did this chick try and take advantage of us or did someone take advantage of her first? (she claimed it had been a gift)
How illegal this is?
I wonder if people do this and actually get away with it...

What do you think BHW, would you ever try and photoshop your way into cheating the system?

People do this shit all the time. When I was in high school years ago I worked at a pizza place. They would come in with obscure coupons that we never printed. We'd generally honor them knowing they were fraudulent.

Hmmm, knowing my client, it wasn't handled as gracefully as that. Do you think the company should have just accepted it?

Depends what type of business is your customer in? There is a big difference between honouring the coupon when you own a pizza place vs. owning a dentist office or seo firm or something like that.

Even if you honor the coupon, you will still be making a profit. So, I were to lose a customer, might as well honor the coupon because there is no way to actually tell if the customer has been tricked or not in the first place. Exactly what the pizza guys did as mentioned by a bhw member above.
