Site Permalink Structure!

I have a site with over 170+ posts published with a permalink structure of: Category name/post name and the link on search bar is a bit long!

Thinking of changing the URLs to 'post name' ONLY so, my questions are...

• Is setting permalinks to "Post" still the best URL structure as per SEO standards?
• Will this create 301 redirects? And, if so, will that affect the site in regards to SEO?
• Is there a better way to do it?

NOTE: The site has Yoast installed.

Not necessarily. The way you have it is right. Just keep categories slug short

If you change the permalink structure is mandatory that you set a 301. Yoast Premium has a good 301 redirect system. Otherwise, go with .htacess or a plugin like Redirect Manager. It will affect your rankings a little bit, probably you will see a drop around a 20% for some months until it stabilizes

I would not do this... Not sure how long are your URL for you. 90% of the times is not worthy if you are already ranking. You will not see any benefits, but the loss will be relevant.

I've recently migrated from a SMF forum to bbpress and the slug changes have been massive. I've dropped from 500/day to 300/day with this change. I'm recovery slowly but the impact as you see has been really big.

There have been theories that the closer to the left your keyword is, the more weight it has. But honestly it's not THAT important as long as your keywords are in the URL. I'd personally leave them since I like how the categories look in the URL, but that's me.
