We're thinking of starting a Wordpress blog. Our main site is built on HTML instead of Wordpress.

Based on our experience, some people say that by putting your blog on a sub-domain your main domain will not be sharing its SEO authority into your sub-domain (unless linked).

How do you think we should structure our website so that our blog can get the most SEO benefit?

Yes... That's right... You should use main domain. Don't put your blog on a sub domain. because If u divide your blogs between two domains means it will affect the traffic. always use main domain, it will create traffic...

I prefer always using of main domain so i can get more SEO benifits.

You're right that you shouldn't divide the sites between two domains. But using a subdomain won't hurt. If that was the case no one would use www in front of their domain.
OP. If you want to keep your current site but just add a blog, do it by a folder instead. Domain.com/blog/

Sub domains work just find and I actually prefer to split it like that depending on the situation.
If you want the SEO effect then interlink them together with a bit of content. :)

If your blog is going to relate to the same subject matter as the main site, sub-directory is the way to go. However, if you are aiming to target separate niches, sub-domains are your best bet.

I would just create a folder and install wordpress linking to it direct from the main domain. Sub-domains arent a good idea unless your themes are going to be quite different.

Not recommended at all.

Engines will consider sub domain as another website so if you go with the blog in sub directory will be considered as part of the site itself. The efforts when it comes to SEO will impact on sub directory but not in sub domain, plus its much easier to rank for long keywords with sub directory rather than sub domain.

compare to the sub domain better you can utilize with sub directory.

But I always think when main domain will crawl then it will get the sub-domain also in Google.
Any Sources on this topic?
Because I can see website like Huffinpost etc ,their subdomain also get so many blogs.
