Should I recover an old domain?

Hi everyone,

I had a domain from June 2022, which I let expire in late 2023. Is it worth to buy the domain again (I still have the website source code) and will it count as a 2022 domain or would it count as a new domain?

I'm not sure but I think that if 1 year had passed between expiration and re-registration it counts as a new domain to google. But I'm not sure...
 
If the domain/website has some decent links & content overall, then it would make some use,
Whenever to be considered totally new or not SEO-wise then it's really up to google algos,
Usually, anything less than 6 months should be recovered quickly, 6-12 months gives mixed results, you'll need to test to find out

I will restore the domain if it has had good enough backlinks and content in the past
 
I would re-buy my old domain only if it had good backlink profile or if the domain name meant something for my brand
 
Thanks everyone! I decided to not buy the domain. It didn't have good backlinks, I was just wondering if Google would like an older domain.
Currently only my old private dev page is ranked by google, every other domain is disliked by google. F*ck Google

as far as I know google favors aged content and sites, not aged domains, so if the content is not more than 1 year old and it's not indexed anymore it's probably not worth re-registering the domain, especially since you say it doesn't have good links

When you buy a previously expired domain, it is treated as a new registration by search engines. Even if you had the domain in 2022, buying it again now would not carry over the age or authority of the previous registration.

Whether it is worth buying an expired domain name again depends on your specific needs and the current state of the domain name. Whether a domain name will be considered "old" depends on a variety of factors, including how quickly you can re-purchase and restore site content, search engine algorithms, and more.

Did you build good links for it? Then only , it will be valuable.

Why did you let the domain drop if it was any valuable at all ? I doubt it will be possible to make money with the domain in any way.
 
If you take the domain back now, it will be considered new, but it may retain value if it still has backlinks or history intact. Check that it hasn't been registered by someone else and consider uploading the original site.

The only value it held was its age and traffic. I let it drop because I was busy with my 9 to 5 job

Thanks everyone for your answers! I have decided to not buy the old domain. It didn't have good backlinks and its not worth it time wise to concentrate on it again
 
If your domain has already accumulated significant domain authority (DA), trust traffic, or high-quality backlinks, it may still retain some SEO value. You can check the domain's backlink profile using tools like Ahrefs, Moz, or Majestic to see if it has valuable links. If the domain has strong and relevant backlinks, repurchasing can help you leverage your existing authority. If the domain was driving organic traffic before expiration, it may still have brand recognition or residual traffic potential that makes it worth reacquiring.
 
If the domain fully expired and dropped, it’ll be treated as a new domain by Google, even if you reuse the same content.

Good point, if the domain had solid backlinks and DA, there’s residual SEO value.
Tools like Ahrefs or Moz can give a clearer picture of what’s left.
If organic traffic or branded searches were strong, it might still be worth reclaiming.
Just make sure it wasn’t penalised or deindexed before expiry.
