Do you have any articles written about this link-building strategy? I know how it works but I don't know which type of backlink should be tier 1, which should be tier 2 and 3.

Sure, it should work fine.
What I do is isolate a particular category or main topic along with all of its sub topics/categories on your site, and only include most relevant internal links as contextual starting from top down in signifigance.
Run that as a split test against your normal structure, add content and see how it performs.
