So i launched a new website early this year, with this i have been paying for SEO, now changed to SEO through this forum.

with this my website has been slowly moving up the ranks but this is very slow and seem to be very bumpy (large movements up and down) but my main competitors have the following-

competitor 1 - 112,500 back links from 462 domains
competitor 2- 62,500 back links from 365 domains

i currently sit at around 600 back links but from 160 domains,

with this vast number of back link difference will i need to get nearer to their number to compete with ranking? Also does the number of domains linking affect this as relative my number of referring domains is higher compared to the number of links.

data taken using ahrefs backlink checker tool

It depends on the niche but .... no .. you wont have to get to that number of links if your on site seo is better and your content is more related than theirs.

Its hard to give clarity without more information.

Generally, when you are going up against established players you want to create pages they are not optimized for and reach 1 on a bunch of those pages in order to get your main keywords to compete with the big boys.

I dont think you necessarily have to build the same backlink to knock them off their positions.

If your onpage is right, and you have better backlinks, a longform related content than what your competition have you can outrank them...

I also think that you should not build same backlinks. Your backlinks should be better, but they don't have to be more. Also, pay attention to the quality of the content on your site.
