I Agree a site with the right audience and consistent organic visibility is often a better choice than one with impressive metrics but little relevance.

Its a good step to start this process termed as competitor research. Also, start doing a backlink from a trusted site in your niche usually delivers better long-term SEO value than a high-metric site that's unrelated

That is a good strategy. Sometimes, if ywhat hfeel the blog is very well managed, you can contact them through proper channel and have a diussion with them about what hurdlee they faced online.

Relevance beats matrices .Niche fit is usually the better long term signal.
 
Organic keyword profile tells me much more than authority metrics. A site that's actively ranking is usually a safer long term choice.
 
Same idea here. Would also check the ranking keywords and traffic sources of the site to ensure there is really an audience overlap. A site that is related and has topical authority is more valuable than a site with a high DR but is not related to the niche.
 
I spend more time reviewing the site's niche, traffic trends, and content quality than looking at DR. Those factors have given me better SEO results over the years.

That’s a solid way to do it.

I also check ranking sites first and look at the actual content and traffic more than DA/DR. Metrics alone can be misleading if the audience doesn’t match.

Sometimes a lower DR site with the right visitors converts better than a high authority site in a slightly different niche.

Do you usually check the sites with any specific tools or just manually go through them?

DA/DR is the misleading. Real traffic and relevance tell the full story.
 
Yeah same here, I put relevance first, content quality too, real organic traffic, and the audience fit over DA/DR. Metrics are helpful to sort things out, but a niche-relevant site with genuine visits usually brings more SEO value than some high metric site with weak relevance, or almost zero audience alignment.
