It's an old trick. Always be cautious about public files with legitimate extensions .pdf, .xlsx, .docx, .hta etc..

There are scams yes, but not by exploiting the system, thats the huge difference
I mean, getting scammed or exploited is a different thing.

off topic but, Mac is far more secure. Linux is very secure as well. If you care about your data security, may be stop using windows… 
Coming to the thread, I guess some kind of vb script attack? Wouldn’t be surprised coz windows uac is badly messed up for a long time afaik (unless they changed it in win 11). Linux/Mac won’t let you run stuffs by default. You have to be really stupid to run it.

MacOS has fewer viruses just because only 1 out of 10 people use it. Not worth making viruses for Mac. I can guarantee, If it was the way around, Mac would have more viruses

You are 90% true on this.
Mac isn't getting almost any viruses because of the market share, but as many research and statistic shown that apple users keep more valuable data / more personal stuff (due to the more trust) on their devices.
BUT the other reason why Mac isn't getting viruses is the level of the protection that the system has/can be set up by user.
For example if I stand up right now, and go for a glass of water, my Mac will log out of my profile in 30s automatically, and I need my biometric fingerprint to use the system again. When I download anything, it will go through at least 2-3 security gates + if you have a security app + when you try to open the file (lets say dmg) you will need you fingerprint.
I'm a part/ex coder myself, but if someone would tell me to make stuff that goes around all these, I could not even start it.
(PS: It's not fanboying if you have valid reasons

Windows has the security that you describe here - these scammers are utilising a vulnerability in excel though. If you're given a random .exe file you'll have to manually choose to trust and install that file + windows defender will likely catch most Trojans etc.You are 90% true on this.

There are a ton of benefits to being a window's user like a lot more software being available for it that Mac doesn't have. Also more games haha that I would end up running a windows environment on Mac if I had it so what's the point!

Antivirus companies will be catching on this. New attacks need them to release updates.

The Excel files themselves are harmless. Just look carefully at the file extension, so that it is an Excel extension, not .exe, .scr, etc. Also, don't run macros unless you are sure of the goodwill of the person who sent the file
