I've just saw this notification in the keyword tool:

In the coming months, the external Keyword Tool will no longer be available. To get keyword ideas, sign in to your AdWords account and try Keyword Planner.

Great, this means that we will require an Adwords account from now on in order to retrieve some traffic data. I do like the output of the Keyword tool, it really helps me speed my process, not that the keyword planner isn't on my taste (you should try it out).

What's your opinion regarding this change?

So long as the membership in the Adwords program remains free until you pay for a PPC campaign, you should still be able to do free searches, just under registration. If they make the registration a paid deal, then it's still useful, just a pain to be paying out just to do keyword research. SEO is supposed to be a "free" method of traffic generation, but Google may be trying to put up expensive hurdles.

Its not a problem. An adwords account costs nothing. Just sign up and you are good to go.

I agree - not a big deal. I have multiple accounts, so doesn't really matter. Unless you're wearing your "tinfoil hat", I wouldn't worry about it.

well, they can tell who is using the keyword tool for SEO rather than PPC this way... especially if you are using webmaster tools too.

It's not all that different so it's no big deal, as long as it remains free and getting approved for Adwords remains easy as pointed out above.

the keyword planner and i dont like it by several reasons, it cant show a research when we put several keywords at same time, it cannot exclude keywords we dont want like the remove field, and for several other reasons
for seo it are very bad too

I dont care about this, I've never used the external one, just the adwords account, it shows a lot more data than the external kw tool.

I agree. When it was first released I read a few articles warning that the keyword tool was going to be dropped so I figured "well shucks... I oughta get used to the keyword planner tool now so I'm ahead of the curve" it was terrible (im an seo, not PPC). There are so many limitations for SEO's but the one that was the hardest for me was to get traffic information on specific keywords you have to download a file... and then they'll show you. What a waste of time. It's probably more effective for the PPC crowd but for SEO's they pretty much just took away all of our best tools.

I will be using the keyword tool till the day it dies. Viva la Keyword Tool!

It seems everyone is missing the main point except a select few who pointed out the lack of user ease with the keyword planner, it's not having the account that's the issue, it's the actual tool itself. They are doing away with the user interface and data display structure of the Keyword Tool and merging it's use with the "Keyword Planner" which if you ask me is a terrible path to go as it's not quite as quick to navigate to get the same information we are after i.e exact searches for example.

This may not seem like a "big deal" and truth be told it's not too big of one but when you regularly are looking up KW searches it's actually quite annoying.

Would anyone know a way to save a large portion of the current data from the keyword tool? So it could still be used later? Maybe a website idea: just a cloned keyword tool basically.

I just hope that software like long tail pro and the like will be able to use data from the keyword planner.
