I am currently running a gaming site, that promotes servers for many different games. There is another person competing for the same brand name as us, and they are currently outranking us for the brand. I was wondering what SEO measures I can take to outrank him, the site is running wordpress, and I have a lot of the onpage SEO that I know how to do complete. I have owned the domain for nearly a year, put content on it for a long while (6 months atleast), but then the hosting went down, and I put it back up about a month ago.

Should I use tools such as "No Hands SEO" or are those types of backlinks useless now? I've been hesitant about linkbuilding because of the panda update, which I don't know how it will affect my linkbuilding, and I've decided to try and ask some people who know about this better before I attempt anything that may mess my site up.

It does not seem as if my competitor is doing much SEO, and I think I own a better domain for the keyword. My competitors domain is keyword d0t us and my website is key-word d0t cee oh m

TLDR: What is the best linkbuilding campaign I should use for a gaming site to get to the top of a brand name keyword with a competitor who does not appear to be building links or SEO.

Thanks for reading this, and any help you can give me would be much appreciated!

Variation is key, if anyone claims to know what google wants for sure, they are lying. We can make assumptions based on results but one algo change and BOOM things go down the toilet.

Some things to consider:

Variation is key for your money site. I like web 2.0's, Bookmarks, Articles, press releases, High PR Blog networks for my money site. I am not opposed to Scrapebox, Xrummer and No Hands SEO for the tiers. I even dont mind blog comments on blogs as long as they are not spammy and the blog is related to my niche.

Another thing that does not get alot of traction on this board and I think is undervalued is Facebook and Twitter. Not so much to try to get instant conversions, but to build a real community of people who follow you. This way if google changes an algo again and your site drops back you can still generate traffic by simply posting a link and saying "hey guys check out this new XYZ"!!

In addition I have found that urls I post to FB and twitter get indexed very fast, so that is a nice side effect.

So a combo of white hat/manual link building to your money site, Black hat to your tiers and social networking will help you. There are some good services here, Bass Tracker boats has a link push for $27, Royal mice has a nice varied service for like $17, there are some social bookmarking services here starting at $7, there are yahoo answers services here pretty cheap, for content you would be doing yourself a disservice by not checking out jascokens ubertoolz. Look around, there are also some nice fiverr gigs that can help, many offered by members of this very forum.

Keep the variety going and make sure all of your link building "looks" natural to the search engines when you apply it to your main site, vary your keywords too.

Good Luck Buddy!!

BTW dont be scared to add new fresh content. I have a site that was stuck on page 2, added a few articles last week and just went to #9 without any additional backlinking.

Thanks getwatchuwant, I have one question. Do you mean Web2.0s such as wordpress, and blogger? If so, I think I'm going to get started right now! If not, please correct me ;)

Thats exactly what I mean, Squidoo, blogger and a host of others there are niche related 2.0's too. For example I googled "adult web 2.0's" and easily found 15-20 related to the niche.

Also think outside the box. Set Google alerts for your niche, select the option to see conversations, usually it will be a blog or forum. If you find someone asking a questions regarding your niche, sign into the forum or post on the blog your answer with a link back to you site. Not only do you get a contextual back-link in the eyes of the SE's but you may get a customer. Dont spam, give a real thoughtful answer, you are the website owner so present yourself as an expert.

Also if you have a real product that you can discount, submit some coupon codes to coupon websites, another free link and another opportunity to get in front of buying customers that are actively looking for what you are selling.

Finally you can create a review blog that reviews the "best of your ncihe" with of ocurse your site/product comes in as #1.. :) alot of poeple search "xyz review"

There are so many ways to backlink and/or get in front of your customers, it is limited only to your time or budget.

just keep your on-page correct with keyword phrases researched categories and games titles..
and grow slowly content 3-5 articles a week .. every now and then push some bhw package but dont overpush .. better invest into more scheduled content growing :)
and try to grow authority in communities of gamers - think for the site as business find where people who buy idle .. dont look just of seo point and seo will come naturally when site is more and more viral ..

jangozo, that is a key point. Like I mentioned in my original post I moved a site a few spots just with content. We are all hung up on links, as we should be but we can move sites in google by adding content that is relevant to the niche.
