Just wondering if anyone here is running a successful channel in the "memes" niche, stuff like this:
https://youtube.com/channel/UCpnkp_D4FLPCiXOmDhoAeYA/videos
https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCqOdHSQbfw3MfosQbbsQhzw/videos

Of course these channels aren't always the easiest to monetize due to the reused content bullshit but that's a topic for another day.

Does YouTube pay well for this kind of content or do they rely on getting a very massive following to make any real money?

This niche does not has very high RPM but you can make up for it with higher number of views. The trend of memes is very viral with youth and thus if you make good content, you can get lot of views.

That's what I thought. I just feel like there must be a lot of tier 1 traffic in it, but then they must be kids or something so I'm not sure what the rpm would look like

It would not be as high as in Tech but good enough to generate some passive income each month from YouTube.

I wonder how to monetize meme content, though. Won't you always run into unorginal content issues?

I do not run a memes channel because I have no skills or interest required to run or maintain such a channel. Your own interests are more important than potential earnings.

Yeah it's a tricky one but there's ways you could manage to monetize it, one would be to just add enough commentary and editing that they think it's transformative enough when they review it.

:D

On a serious note though I agree to a certain extent, there are niches I just couldn't be bothered to get into even if they'd make x because they take a lot of time and I have better shit to do, but if you find one that mostly runs itself and pays well it's good to just learn to like it. I've done it in the past and never regretted it, it grew on me seeing all the engagement every time I'd upload.

Monetizing on YouTube without any problem, would love to share

Yes YouTube pays very well for this kind of content. But having a big following doesn't hurt.
