ripped off 4k .. what do I do?

If it were me I would gather ALL documentation, evidence, communications, list of work done etc.

Then I would just say - pay the bill then you get the logins. Don’t like it, take me to court.

@OP this is good advice. Dont be worried. Is the domain registered under your name?

The wrong person would be the plaintiff in that kind of suit.

My response would be, "Don't misspell my name when you file the law suit as I find that annoying.".

Also OP - if the domain is registered in your name you own it and hold it on trust for them.

Tell them to go to court to enforce the trust (never will, international issue)

Wrong person? Don't assume liability! :D:D

Wrong person meaning the accuser should be the plaintiff getting sued.

This thread is upside down.

We need a coder to come in here and upside down the thread but should we summon one Damien would probably send warm beer and some kind of tea so I can have a "cuppa" to my home so I'll not ask for that to happen.

Don't back down. First of, let this be a lesson that you should always be paid. No matter what excuse the client says to you.

Prepare some evidence around how they owe you money in the form of emails or texts. Give this to the client & say that you will take them to small claims court.

If they still don't back down, get in touch with a lawyer & create a letter of intent. This should scare them into paying you.

Best of luck!

Yeah this is great. I think you can get a letter of intent done for rather cheap!

thanks for the advice everyone, I do not own the the domain but the site is on my servers. I just don't want another company to come in and take my hard work as their own, and get paid of course.

I will keep this updated, and thanks again everyone.

Just keep the server and everything, if they ain't got money to pay you, they aint got money to sue you :D.

Tell them that you will transfer everything over as soon as you get the payment you deserve.

It's a lesson for you. Don't believe anyone, When you find they are hesitating to pay you, force them to pay. You leave it like that for 6 months. They are using your hard work. Be open and direct when it's business and only give time to a client who buys from you frequently.

Put up a simple HTML page saying suspended - Don't delete the site though, just whack up a HTML page so it can't be bypassed. 301 all internal pages back to the new homepage, it will start to hit their SEO pretty quickly as customers will be redirected back to the new home page, from a landing page.

"Site is Suspended. Please contact billing within 72 hours."

That way you can put it as a 'glitch' and say "I will spend time backing up and releasing the site to you once we've got some sort of funds released"

The message will be enough to not want their customers knowing they don't pay their bills but not enough to be slander

I like the idea but maybe the ranks will be lost in the mean time, as the site will be down. Company then probably won't pay a penny.

If I was OP I would remove all contact details/contact forms/sales functions so the sites rank stay but the company doesn't benefit.

Just delete fucking scumbags from life. Leave last message. Tell them time for paying or you will delete everything. If they don't pay, go on, find a new costumer! I had around 50-60 peoples who didn't pay me my services, and I will have them 100 more. That is business world when you are on begin! ;)

P.S.
Go to party, have a great night! Take couple days off, do whatever makes you happy. That's my advice. I think you will not see any penny :(

Take their website down, you said you got login right? Tell them to pay or it will stay down. Nobody of them should tell you what to do unless they pay their fucking bills. Also you got access to Webmaster Tools. Disavow all the links you built. Delete everything you ever did to this site.

Just imagine...these guys knew they won't pay you, but all the time they just let you work. Now its up to you to hurt them as much as possible or just to leave it. Hunt or being hunted. Its your choice.

Oh come on, don't give him an advice like that. If you got 50-60 people didn't pay you, you should definitely work on yourself instead of giving advices like this. Again: Hunt or be hunted.

I think that is just losing the time. But w/e. It's his decision.

BTW. I don't care for that 50-60 peoples. That's how I am working, give upfront 1st time when we make deal (5-10% of 100-200$ budget) and after that they don't answer :) But people who really need that will be back always.

I don't understand how you fell for that shit, 2 months of non payment should have meant you stopped working.
What are the terms of your contract?
As for these other guys, just tell them as soon as you receive payment then you will hand over login details to the client.
Actually, why are you pussying about, YOU should take the CLIENT to the small claims court.
Exactly, what will the court punish you for ? Working on a website of a client even without getting paid ? You should get compensation for that with interest.

I would go to their office and talk it out with them, be firm and dont take any bullshit. Do things on your terms and demand your payment, hopefully you had a contract in place.
