I've been thinking about doing some reciprocal links and then putting on my robot's file to "nofollow" and "noindex" the page where I am supposed to be giving links.

That way it will look as they are 1-way links instead of reciprocal links.

Could I get penalized for this? Or there is no way big "G" could find out what I'm doing?

Trying to make a buck or two
Google is not the one you have to worry about. As soon as your "link partners" realize that they are not getting a link from you they will remove theirs. Then no link for you and your rankings drop.

Better idea for long term viability is to set up a separate site or two that are not connected to your main site (different ip, nameservers etc.) and make it a three way.

You give links to the other sites from your secondary sites and they give links to your main site. Everybody wins.

+1, for ABC link trades... get a good link trade/exchange script to keep track in auto mode for you to watch if a trade drops your link. And the script will auto drop theirs straight away on your site, and if they put it back up, on their site, the script will auto put their link back up auto on your site.
