OK, I know there are a bunch of you that are into taking care of your bodies and many of you are into supplements and such.

One of my doctors suggested that I find a protein product that I can stand for a minor issue I am having so I'm asking for suggestions, ideas, thoughts, and whatever else you can offer an idiot in that space.

I do not mind paying for a premium product as long as it does what it should do.

I'm no kid, I'm in my mid 60's so I do not know if that comes into play in that area so those of you that are knowledgeable have that tiny bit of information.

I would prefer a powder that can be mixed with almost anything other than milk (almond milk and other alternatives are fine) and I don't care if it tastes like rancid dragon meat that is 6,000 years old or tastes like something from a 3 Stared Michelon restaurant. The goal is to put on some weight using a product, or products, that will help me achieve that.

I could go to a musclehead forum, read, get ideas, and then take action but that would have me trusting people I do not know and I know a lot of you from my years as a member on the forum as well as having the opportunity to serve as a moderator here.

So, if you have that knowledge, and do not mind helping a brother out, I'm all ears and appreciate any input you may offer as to what makes sense to use that is sold on Amazon.

I really wonder why would the doctor suggest using protein powder unless you don't like to eat food,
100 gram of chicken breast would have almost the same amount of calories and protein as 1 scoop of protein powder,
same goes for 100 gram of lean beef/fish

I agree with this. Supplements should only be used if you can not reach your daily protein/calorie/whatever intake. If you like food you can always go for high protein meals like fish, chick breast, any type of other meat etc. - If you really wanna go for Protein Shakes then, you can try out Optimum Nutrition Gold Standard Whey or any of the Scitec Nutrition Protein Shakes (that come in these blue or red containers). These are by far the best ones i've had any they are very tasty (with Milk or Water).

Have your tried gaining weight with a high-protein diet instead?

Actually, my diet has been protein-centric for most meals but my breakfast is an off the shelf product or a fruit salad from whatever is in season here. There are times when our lunch is very light but dinner always has a solid protein aspect (great wives are hard to come by and I got one) and my wife is very mindful of that need in my diet.

Fish, chicken, etc does not work for us in the AM as I get up well before the rest of the house, and, even if I would eat that for breakfast, I'd be cooking and making noise that could wake my wife and our dog thus the pivot to a protein powder. If I were a single mam, I'd be all about getting up at 4AM, cranking up the grill and starting my day off with some salmon or free-range chicken.

The protein powder is to fill in the holes in the diet and this Doc seems to finally be one that has a handle on what is going on inside the body I occupy.

A plethora of thanks for taking the time and sharing your wisdom and I really appreciate that.

Please keep those cards and letters coming.

The question is what you want to do like you want to gain weight or lose, whats your goal?
Gain. Crazy, I know, as most are looking to lose weight but I need to put on a few pounds.
Costco is usually the better choice
I don't shop there but I appreciate the suggestion.

I have a recommendation: DIY Solylent

There are some meds I have to take that make it difficult to eat most days, among other issues. The only thing I've been able to tolerate is DIY Soylent. You can get the recipes from this website here: https://www.completefoods.co/

The main ingredient that I use is soy protein powder (here's the one I got on Amazon, just because you asked for a link). This is mixed in with ginger to help with the nausea, a little bit of sugar just to make it taste better, a little bit of oat powder for carbs, an oil for fats (canola oil works), and psyllium husk for fiber. There's some other stuff mixed in specifically for me, but that's just the base of it.

I don't care if it tastes like rancid dragon meat that is 6,000 years old

Hey, I totally understand your struggle with gaining weight. Right now, I'm at 60KG (was 57 before a month ago) and facing the same challenge. But I've found something that's really helping me out!
I've started using mass gainer supplements along with a nutritious diet. I make sure to have 10 white eggs, 400GM of chicken breast, and white rice, among other healthy foods. This combination has been amazing for me, and I've seen some really positive results.
If you're also looking to gain weight, I highly recommend trying out mass gainer supplements. Just make sure to choose a good one with plenty of calories and protein. In the USA, there are some great brands that offer quality products to support your weight gain journey.
Oh, and here's a tip: remember to use 3-4 scoops daily to see the best results. Starting with just 1 scoop may not be enough. Also, listen to your body - everyone is different, so you might need to adjust the amount depending on your body type and how well it digests the supplement.
I hope this helps you on your weight gain journey! Let's get those gains together!

If you want to gain weight then go with Products like mass gainer which will have high-calorie in a single scoop, It will have proteins and other necessary nutrients, But to get it working you need to go to Gym and start working out, So your body will spend its energy in the gym and then when you give the mass gainer supplements it will act like a fuel to repair your tissues and help you gain weight. consuming weight gainer supplements without going to gym is a totall waste. It's not a must to take supplements if you can get a healthy high calorie diet from your foods, you will have to eat 5-7 times a day.

Will try to make this really simple:

Calories feed energy
Protein feeds muscle growth

If you are above daily calorie burn (how much fuel your body burns a day), your body will store it for fat
If you are below, you will burn fat

3 types of supplements (shake) you want to look at
  1. mass gainer
    1. medium protein, lots of calories
  2. whey
    1. lots of protein, medium calories
  3. whey isolate
    1. lots of protein, low calories
    2. useful if you do not like lactose / allergic

Small very fine tune adjustments or "hacks" really aren't going to make the difference you want. Neither are different brands. It's really all the same crap.
You first should look at calorie intake and protein intake, don't worry too much about where it's coming from.

How many calories are you burning per day, you may ask?
https://tdeecalculator.net/1689919302396.png
Enter some quick numbers here and it will calculate it for you.
For example, mine is around 3000,
If I consume 3000-3500, I will gain weight (body stores fat).
If I consume 2500-3000, I will lose weight (Body cuts into fat reserves to burn and create energy, ATP compound)

I can go much deeper into the science behind it if you want, but I don't want to overwhelm you with pedantics.
I wish you best of luck.

I'm not sure which brand is reliable in the US but only take whey protein. If you're allergic to dairy then go for a plant based/vegan protein powder.
Fish, chicken, etc does not work for us in the AM as I get up well before the rest of the house, and, even if I would eat that for breakfast, I'd be cooking and making noise that could wake my wife and our dog thus the pivot to a protein powder.
I can relate to this. You can shift to boiled eggs, I'm sure that won't make a lot of noise. Stick to just egg whites though.

I can relate to difficulties in diet, I have to stick to a low carb diet, which means I have to increase my fat intake, which means I have to look at the source of fats to try stick to the healthier options. So I have to balance my proteins, fats and carbs. Ugh, it’s a nightmare sometimes.

if you struggle with protein shakes, perhaps have your lovely wife cook an extra portion in the evening that you could have in the morning without waking everyone up? I also creep around the house early mornings so as to avoid waking everyone up.

I would go with 2 types of protein, whey and casein.

Whey is faster acting, and contains a decent amount of calories - like some others in the thread, I also recommend Optimum Nutrition Gold Standard Whey.

Casein is slower to absorb, and I would drink this before bedtime and let it digest overnight. For casein, I recommend Optimum Nutrition Gold Standard Casein.

Both come in various flavors and can be mixed with either milk or water, depending on your preference.

If the goal is to add weight, you could also try creatine, which will add some water weight after a while.

Stay away from whey isolate; it's not that it's bad, it just does not contain as many calories as the other alternatives. It's a more filtered powder, containing more protein per scoop.

Also stay away from BCAA powders, they're useless and do nothing but give you a placebo effect if anything.

Good luck!

Hey BTB,
I have been consistently working out for the last 10 years and Whey has been one of my important and fast-digesting sources to fulfill my Protein Requirements mainly in the morning when I wake up empty stomach!
I would not suggest a brand immediately because it does not work like that, not with me at least! You need to find a product that is easy to digest and get the job done without giving an extra load to your stomach! You can Check out Bodybuilding.com as they have a wide range of Genuine Whey Supplements.(Go with a Regular Whey not isolate) and consider buying a small quantity and start with one scoop daily with milk/water or any preferable liquid of your choice for 15 days. If all is well and you start noticing little gains, stick to that Product and use it.
Bodybuilding has become a very big industry, so you will see Many Whey Supple Brands but it's really important to know which one works best for your Body!
My Personal 2 fav brands are Dymatize & ON !
Also simultaneously focus on getting Protein from solid foods coz supplements play only 10-15% of the role in your overall diet.
Good Luck!
