What do you think about PMDs in 2020? I use a PMD with the homepage in affiliate website. The domain itself is almost 1 yr old and now I am thinking whether I need to keep it or use a branded name instead? The ranking isn't great though...BUT I am not certain if the domain change would boost serps.

thanks

PMDs, EMDs are still rankable, but it's easier to flip a brandable domain, IMO.

You can rank any type of domain including PMDs if your onpage is solid and you use quality off page.

Doesn't it make it easier to get an over-optimization penalty with EMDs/PMDs?

There's no such thing as an EMD/PMD over-optimization penalty. There's a mild ranking boost but not that much.

However, there is one important factor: People tend to click on them, and due to higher CTR you get to rank them faster. So they definitely work but for an indirect reason mostly.

And you are simply over thinking.

EMDs and PMDs are losing their specific value unless they are with good content and off/on page SEO.
