Me and my friends are building a gaming site for a specific game. We already have two social media accs with 3k+ followers, we have the whole idea clear etc. It will be a nisched gaming community site that will become a multigaming site eventually if everything goes well. I have some programming experience but not enough for making a site of this level.

Thing is my friend had a similar site for another game back from 2011, so i have the code for that one and its in php. Its for news, video playback etc. Weve got some money to spend for the project, we just dont really know what our next smart move here would be. I have a programmer friend that willl have a look at the php code and see if its usable at all today. So i basically have these questions:

    1. Could PHP be a good enough language even for the later stage multigaming site or would we want to code the site in something like asp.net for that?(would be a huge site with lots of functions etc)

    2. Would you recommend me to hire someone just to code the site or should i find someone for a JV instead? Im thinking that it might be problematic to pay someone $$$ one time and then were sitting there with a site which we cant edit at all without paying someone for it. Might be worth it tho i dunno, for asp.net i could do smaller things myself.

JV somehow feels like what we should be doing here, just not sure we can trust people with that etc.. So BHW legends, what would you recommend?

    Hi there,

As a developer, I'd say php can handle almost anything when it comes to websites.

You can start by building your niche website with wordpress. When everything goes well and wordpress is not good enough anymore, you can start looking at other options.
Buy yourself a nice wordpress theme, and you are good to go.

Unless you hire a lawyer and make a non-compete and non-disclosure agreement with your employees you will have to either do it yourself or trust the other party and hope for the best.

Outsourcing or doing it yourself will depend on your skills, time and money of course.

PHP is as good as any other language for web development no matter how big your project will be in the future. Just pick a good framework that fits your needs and you're good to go.

Gaming brought me to programming back in the day, and later programming to this incredible forum and although I don't have any gaming related projects at the moment, I'd love to be part of one.

I'd be willing to JV depending on the game and after discussing your project idea and making my due diligence. I'd probably code everything in django.

Also, if it's just a news / video site, don't hire anyone and do it yourself with wordpress.

Thanks for your replies. I thought of doing it in wordpress, as i have some experience and i know html,js,jquery, asp,C# etc i should be able to manage to get an ok site going. Though were aiming for A+++ grade, so might be better to outsource it anyway. You really think wordpress is good enough for this kind of project?

Were expecting 200k++++ visists/month and there will be video uploads from most players.. My intuition says this is too big for wordpress, though i must admit my intuition could be useless in this case lol.
