I’m currently looking over a few keywords in Ahrefs that I’m considering writing an article on.

Now I was wondering what you all use to determine if you should go for the keyword. I’m already using a KD% of less than 20.

When I look at the top 10 results in Ahrefs it says the highest page authority score is 49 and that page is currently taking the 9th position in Google. And the top three results have a page authority score of 6, 0, and 0.

Now do you only use the KD% and page authority score to determine if you are going to go after a keyword? Or do you also take into consideration other factors?

Doesn't really matter imo. As long as you have a good unique article with solid on page and off page none of that matters a whole lot. Ive had plenty of kd 75s+ where I wrote an article and had no backlinks and hit top 10 within a few days after indexing them, most of my blogs are considered to be in the health niche also which I heard is tough.

KD is a joke.

If all the other results are satisfying the search intent, you’ll need to do something more than just publishing an article.

In addition to the article, you’ll need to have supporting content, internal links and probably external links to replace the existing sites on the SERP.

You're looking at all the wrong things. These metrics are only good for filtering, to decide whether a keyword is worth going for you need to plug it in the search and look at the top 10 results. If they are weakish/affiliate type sites or if you see forums/quora or other user generated content then you know it's an easy keyword. It's as simple as that, fuck the scores.

Also, if you see bigger sites ranking but they are not targeting the keyword OR satisfying the search intent for the keyword then you can write a better article and outrank bigger sites as well.

The keyword seems fairly easy to target. Check how the pages ranking on page one have their content optimized for it, article length, keyword in title and URL.
I would give this a try if I were you.

I guess I'm just over complicating things again.

If the content is really good, you can beat authority blogs also. But this will not happen in one day. Google will check how people are responding to the content and then push you up or down.
