Penguin 3.0 is rolling out?

Over the weekend every single keyword I track went up - some jumped up from nowhere to page 2 - and stayed there for the whole weekend. Now everything has dropped down again with most of the keywords sitting in the positions they were in before May 14 update. I don't what is happening, but it feels special.

The funniest part is, now and then I check the spammiest keywords in search and of course, all frikin hacked sites spammed to death with no legit sites until around page 3. Well done Google, you are the Spalding Gray of crap, sorry Peter.

Also, if you cross reference Algoroo with moz's algorithm history they don't match too well: http://moz.com/google-algorithm-change

For instance, algoroo definitely detected Panda 4.0 but completely missed Pigeon. It also missed Penguin 2.0 completely (may 22, 2013).

Just food for thought: What Algoroo picks up doesn't correlate well with the magnitude of the algorithm update.

I like MozCast.com but I've found the best way to understand my fluctuation in rankings is to track sites in the same niche that are not undergoing SEO. If they have dramatic movements around the same time my site moves I know it's not just me, it's the algo. Really doesn't matter if they call it Penguin 3.0 or not, updates are updates. Nothing we can do about it. Better to understand if it's your site being hit or your entire niche/the entire web moving.

So you use a control group like we do. What did you notice this past week? We found nothing major as expected. You just can't afford to be reactionary in this business.

i do not care anymore about backlinks rankings etc

only compose links that will bring referral traffic is my strategy

yeah i agree bro. At the end of the Aug 1st week i have SERP movements.
But BigG didn't announce official. Let us see, what happen??? :p

I noticed increases on pages with backlinks, and losses on pages which were naturally ranking with zero backlinks. This seemed to only be the case on one of my sites, however. The other seemed to stay put.

somethings been churning in the serps for the last 20 hours,,, any reports?

Yea I agree everytime I look back things are shaking up

I wonder if there will be a PageRank update. Both PR and Penguin haven't been updated for 10 months.

But you claimed that you need "quality content" for the bots, that isn't the case at all, all these updates are nothing more then a shuffel of the index, if you really belief that it has anything to do with yuour content you're just not testing enough.

This is 'funny' that Google is giving manual penalties for poor quality content which shows the bots can't detect a lot of it.

Really happy I came across this thread!

I had started a small niche porn website as a small project at the end of july in order to learn about affiliate marketing and get a basic understanding of SEO. My site name/url is three words, those three words were my main keyword and it seemed to be doing well. My organic search traffic was finally starting to grow pretty rapidly, Checked myself and was result #11, i went from 12 visits in a day to 18, then 20, then 30. At my peak on august 14th i had received 300 impressions and 60 visits that day (yeah yeah,we all have to start somewhere).

Then all of a sudden on the 15th I was down to 20 visits, august 16th down to 3. I decided to search for my main keyword a few days later and had noticed that my site wasn't listed for that search term anymore. Quickly double checked the keyword in webmaster tools and confirmed that no one had reached my site with that search term since 8/16. My site still has all of it's pages indexed and I'm showing on page 2 and 3 for my other keywords, but not showing up for my site name keyword really seems to be fucking me over now.

Copy of graph included..

Is this most likely a coincidence in timing or could penguin 3.0 have caused this?

I'm new to this....This info kinda worries me.
Does this type of fluctuation happen often?
Seems like a roller coaster.

I'm relatively new too but adapt or perish seems to be the name of the game for most businesses. The upside to this business is that it would appear there is an army of fellow SEO allies larger than any corporation, mostly working together.

In a word, yes.

Le Goog is always sending out updates, some larger that others to be sure. That doesn't mean you can't beat the algo or make it work for you with some study and dedication. There is a ton of info out there about seo. Some good, a lot bad. Most of your success will come from trial and error and using offshoots of the strategies talked about here.

But, I mean, who doesn't love roller coasters? That shit's fun man.

It looks like Google was only testing Penguin and it's not ready to roll out. Because it needs a "complete data refresh" and "a complete rerun" of the algorithm.

I guess that's why there hasn't been a PR update to the tool bar as well. The TBPR update would need a complete data refresh and that's not going to happen until Penguin is rolled out.
