what's that got to do with anything, if the site you build is high quality....well you have a few chances of it ranking good

Never a good sign when your positions improve right before the update. Happened with 2.1, positions improved right before, once they announced that the update rolled out all the rankings went to sh*tter.

I hope they will stop mass penalting normal sites. They already turned from search engine to ads engine, that's obvious it's all about adwords income.

For starters I would never send stupid backlinks to any of my sites, I may not be the smartest guy around but I know how to backlink a site.
And of my 41 sites the one that makes the least per month is in the 1K range and even I know to just let that ride unless I do some serious split testing... but I do get your point, a knucklehead could ruin a decent site with bad off site.

Um you must be new to SEO if you think Google relying entirely on-page optimization is coming anytime soon. Matt Cutts literally JUST confirmed they will be relying on links for the foreseeable future. He said straight up they tried to remove their reliance on links in a private rollout and the results were worse than how they are now with links. LOL this quality content for SEO mantra is the biggest myth out there, the only reason you should have quality content is for your conversions, that is it.
I have numerous sites with local spun content outranking yelp, angielist and yellowpages pulling in leads and calls every single day of the week, none of these sites have high quality content and some of the sites go 4/5/6 years back, never been touched just raking in the leads.
I'll bet you never tested your own hypothesis, you just saw a post from some 'guru' on the warriorforum and ran with it and made it your mantra, people like you seem to forget that Google can't read, they can't even figure out the basic grammar so while you feed the google bots $10- per 100 words conentg because you think you need to entertain the google bots i outrank you with simple spun or even duplicated content.
You know why, because of my backlinks, SEO is still 90% offsite, but don't take my word for it, test it yourself, you should always be testing! And if you are always testing you will see that Google isn't near as powerful as you thought it was.
And how do you explain all these mom and pop sites that have done everything accordion the Google webmaster guide and still get fucked out of the index, Content is only important for conversions, NOT for SEO!
