I'm actually still a bit confused on the link variation question. Could somebody shed some light on whether or not link variation is important, or a focused blog commenting-image comment-guest book backlinking campaign would be enough (as opposed to also using Web 2.0, guest posts etc)?

Eventually they will get under filter or will be Penguinised during the next refresh. You can speed up the process by buying them some obvious links and reporting them multiple times. It is much easier now as Google "outlawed" everything, including guest blogging, infographics and press releases.
It is hard work though. The shitty links you send their way must become a significant part of their backlinks profiles or it won't work.
PS. Before we have a bunch of moral and ethic nazis replying how bad it is to penalise someone else, I say I like MORE people using negative SEO very aggressively so it becomes EPIDEMIC. This way the fuckers from Mountain View won't be able to get away with it anymore.
To get link variety you can use shortened urls. In recent weeks I saw sites ranking in certain niches where they only had one backlink according to ahrefs as well as searching for the plain url in Google. That one link was a shortened url which had approx. 100,000 links to it.

I know a couple people that are using their spare server resources to blast shit links at URLs posted in Google's webmaster help forum. Another person is scraping some penalized websites announced at Google's help forum and ranking them under fresh domains. I'm telling you that this shit is getting pretty damn comical!

Looks like business as usual, today. One short tail SERP I watch has a site ranking page 1, registered last week, with 51 redirects amongst other links and those redirects themselves have some light link building plus redirects from other sites to them.
