Hi,

Very interesting post, can i ask why you redirect the penalized domain to: www.newdomain.com/sitemap ? I thought you had to redirect to www.newdomain.com why do you redirect to the sitemap?

I am curious about why the re-direct to the site map? Does that spread the link juice out over the entire site?

Looking forward to another update, this is a great case study.

I use a lot of 301s from penalised sites, but never to them; awesome twist +rep.

hello,
no matter how many backlinks you have but more important how these backlinks are natural, authoritative and relevant to you website.

301 Status error are very common in dynamic website, this can easily fix by simple coding in .HTaccess file.
Rest, check backlink qualities if you are buying such domain.

Tried this before. From my experience, you will quickly regain the pre-penalized rankings but they'll only last a few weeks or a month. I cloned the site and 301'd each old page to the identical page on the new domain.

I did recover the penalty later from adding a number of higher quality links but I doubt the redirect was a factor in that.

Here is what I'm trying on a recently penalized domain (with ~120k links);
- 301 to a brand new domain, exact replica of penalized site
- Buying 2 'clean' and aged domains with a good link profile (similar but not identical niche), and ALSO doing a 301 to the brand new site (~100k total links)
- Buying 2 more 'clean' and aged domains to 301 to the penalized site, with a totally different niche and wildly different anchor text profile (~50k total links)

I'll post my updates, I'm literally doing this today, so maybe an early hint as to results in the next week or two.

I'm expecting to come back stronger than I was before; the theory being that I've hopefully both addressed the original issue of poor link diversity, and also added more power to the new domain by way of the two new 301's pointing directly at it and at the same time given it a direct link diversity that varies better than the original (now penalized) site did.

it might work short term, but you can find the penalty is passed over later with a 301

Could you upload some pictures with your rankings? I'd love to see if the effects are sustainable.
