I agree, it is a lot of initial work. In my experience, my VAs aren't profitable for at least a month because I have to train them. For that 1-ish months it'd be better if I just did the work myself.
However, that is really good when you compare it to the average employee who takes like what, 6 months to become profitable?
A VA is an investment in your future. Short-term you're going to lose money on efficiency but long-term you'll make money once they become trained.
Luckily unlike the average employee, VAs are often hired on a part-time basis to do routine tasks over-and-over again, which makes training them much easier.
Give them slack. Don't use them for time-sensitive tasks unless you can 100% trust their turn-around task. Be kind to them, don't treat them like shit, treat them like any other employee, be glad they are willing to work for so cheap.
Provide extremely detailed training materials. I do video captures and create video lessons for my VAs. I create training tasks. That sort of thing. Work on your training, work on your patience.
Philippines > India any day.
Oh and pay high-end. If you pay high-end you'll get quality employees, just like if you were hiring locally.
