So I had some issues logging in Twitch on an older version of Firefox, and in my research I stumbled on Palemoon and decided to install it because it supports a key Firefox extension that I need. The Palemoon version I installed is 1 year old. The Firefox version I use is 4 years old.

Well so I installed it and Palemoon feels really smooth. I needed an extension for it and for some reason when I found it on the Palemoon extensions site, I couldn't install it. So I just dragged and dropped the one I use on Firefox, and it got installed and working fine.

And then I tried logging into Twitch, and it worked.

Then I did a googlefuck and apparently Palemoon... well... google says:

"Pale Moon is faster than Firefox, uses less memory and is compatible with many -- but far from all -- extensions and add-ons that are a big part of Firefox's personality."

I'm thinking of giving Palemoon a shot for some of the work I do. Of course there's a million things that could go wrong, and any one of them could make me abandon it, but may be worth a shot.

So what do you guys think about Palemoon?

This is what I got on that Twitch situation - https://www.blackhatworld.com/seo/cant-login-to-twitch-old-version-browser.1357120/

So I pissed some blood over here haha :p

I think the problem is that Firefox doesn't support loading fonts from a different site than the one you're visiting, some cross-border something something. And I think Twitch the way they implemented the font loading it lacks something that would make Firefox load the font anyway. I don't know really, just guess.

Point is Twitch won't login. Last time I successfully logged into Twitch on that Firefox was maybe 1-2 months ago. So they made some change since. Who knows, maybe Twitch catches on that their crappy slow-as-shit site doesn't work on older Firefox browsers, and they fix it... or maybe not...

But there's other considerations here. If Palemoon is indeed faster, if it indeed consumes less resources, and if I can get it working to my satisfaction and at scale, then it could give me more bang for my buck.

Like say I have a PC and it handles 40 Firefox portable browsers running at the same time for 24 hours. If Palemoon demands less of the PC, maybe it can run 45 browsers. That's a bump.

I'll play with it a little bit. The chances it works for me are very low because I'm difficult and the simplest issue could make me give up on it. But, worth a shot right :)

Why not just use chrome?

Pfff, chrome he says. Why don't I just kick myself in the nuts? :D hahaha

No but it's not as flexible. At least I don't think it is.

Okay, so you do this, I'll tell you. You open Firefox (and it seems to work on Palemoon too) and you type this in the address bar:

about:config

You enter and then you type this in the search bar:

media.volume_scale

Then you set it to 0.

What happens now is the browser will never play any audio. There's no audio coming out of the browser. None. Zero. God himself can't get sound to come out of that browser.

Can chrome do that? Maybe, but I doubt it, because they don't want you to be free to do what you wanna do.

Ok , but how do I undo this now?

So Palemoon just installed an edited extension I have. On normal Firefox you can't install an extension if you edit it, unless you get it signed. And I ain't signing nothing, kiss my ass :p

I can install unsigned extensions on my Firefoxes that I use too, but I had to do a little hack I found on some forum that allows me to install unsigned extensions (fuck you firefox you nazis... still love you more than google). So Palemoon wins, that's nice.

I just set a custom shortcut icon on my Palemoon, worked like a charm. Because when you open 20 browsers you sort of need each to have a different icon in the taskbar so that you know which one is which right :D

Palemoon real nice so far, I like.

Well, so I got palemoon working. But it was a total bitch.

I had to do all sorts of maneuvers and digging. Using old user-agent extension, custom set the actual user-agent.

Can't use default Greasemonkey. Well, I installed default Greasemonkey an older version but it wasn't working, then I figured out I need a Palemoon-specific Greasemonkey extension. That worked.

Replaced one extension that I couldn't add to Palemoon with a Gresemonkey script. It seems to work.

One other extension for changing tab titles I can install on Palemoon, but I can't get it to show the icon in the browser so I can make the changes I need. Perhaps I can edit the extension itself to pre-set the functions I need. What's fucked up is the extension installs and probably works, but the icon doesn't appear because of some fucking difference between how Firefox and Palemoon display the extension icons.

Ugh.. it's a mess actually.. but this may just work. I can't use this for my entire operation here unless I hire someone to make some extensions that I have working on Firefox to work on Palemoon. In fact I think it's even an easy fix, as all of my extensions work with old Firefox version. I think it's something about Firefox extensions have "manifest" file while Palemoon ones have "install.rdf". I think if the manifest files were to be converted into install.rdf files properly, the extensions would install and work.

Oh well, whatever the fuck ever, I may be able to use Palemoon for some stuff I need and replace Firefox for it. I need to test Palemoon at scale and see how it performs. We'll see...

So I've left a browser of Palemoon running while I was sleeping.

Checking task manager, Palemoon definitely uses less memory as compared to Firefox. It's also smaller, uses less space on the hard drive. These two things aren't really a big deal, because I have more than enough ram memory and hard drive space on all of my computers. However, less is usually better, so it's better :)

For CPU I'm not entirely sure if it uses less or more, because it moves up and down you know. But it certainly isn't using more than Firefox. So it's either equal or less, so it's good.

I had a bit of an issue with setting the user agent for some site, and then I found this - https://forum.palemoon.org/viewtopic.php?t=14062

I'm not sure if such a thing is available in FIrefox as I always used extensions for changing user agent, but I tried it and it works on Palemoon, and it's pretty sweet actually. Very nice.

I'm gonna try and use Palemoon a bit more and see how it performs. Because running 1 browser is 1 thing... um... but running 20 browsers is 20 things... different :p
