Never had expectations when comes about spamdexing. Usually costs are pretty low when you code by yourself, so it is just some low cash and time involved, any ROI is good in this case, cause can be made on scale.

I don't think the content is that bad either, as long as it passes complete duplication it gets indexed and ranked.
I've seen many sites ranking that simply switch the order of their blocks of text on multiple pages and rank them all.
I also think because he links to multiple amazon subdirectories/pages make it looks less like a doorway page since posts dont all go to 1 page like a standard thin affiliate.
Finally the amazon links are only starting to show below initial 2 paragraphs so he offers "information" before jumping the users to multiple destinations.

large scale content and 26yr old domain
I have been following sites like this for months now.
There are sites which solely built on content scraping, purely affiliate and thin content and they’re doing absolutely fine, 5x more traffic than this.
The difference from those sites and this one is, this one is obviously crappy, full of grammar and shitty content.
Those sites are, doing better at content presentation though.

I'm kinda confused as to how you categorize the site.
You said that the site was on automation.
Are you talking about the site being about automation, tactics, and topics?
Or you are talking about a site that uses content that is automatically generated using artificial intelligence?
These are two totally different things.
There are lots of websites that focus on data automation that are doing really well because that's a pretty hot sub niche with a very specific market.
Still, if this was an AI-driven site, this should not be a surprise.
But just like with any kind of technology, there are going to be people who are going to focus primarily on volume.
Basically, they just click on a button and just crank out as many different pages as possible and populate as many different domains as possible.
The old churn-and-burn business model is here to stay.
So this is not really that big of a surprise no matter how large the site gets.
Still, this can be a learning experience, because even if people are still going to try to automate content, I'm sure things are beginning to become so clear now that there are certain best practices that people should focus on.
