Noob stuff - where do I start?

Hi guys,

I've been doing web dev for years, but never really tried SEO in any form before, aside from the most basic white hat. In short, I am a programmer, not a marketer After being laid off, a friend and I decided it was time to try and earn some independent income, so we launched a site geared toward some good potential keywords (we did research that part pretty well, and they are included in the domain name), signed up for Adsense and paid someone in India to "promote" us by submitting to various directories, and providing backlinks. I suppose that was the part where it went wrong. Although we are seeing some income in Adsense, and webmaster tools claims we have literally hundreds of thousands backlinks (!), the site just doesn't come up if "link:...." is typed in google. Is this a bad sign? What can we do to rectify this? Any suggestions are greatly appreciated. I really am eager to learn this art. Thanks in advance!

try site:yoursite - as long as you see your pages your not being penalised, may also be worth checking to see if your site is penalised, type 'google penalty checker' -> i use a site with the words seomoves in there.. i also use SEO Powersuite Professional, this helps for checking backlinks as well as rankings for your keywords, hope some of this is useful to you

Seems like the backlinks you got were not something that did a whole lot to get you ranked or you have some tough KWs to rank.

Head over to the services for sale section and see what is offered there... some of what is offered is gold and probably can help you get your site ranked.

On another note, continue to add fresh unique content to your site on a regular basis and ping that content.. google is a fan of that sort of thing.

Thanks Xcon11, that was really useful and informative! site:... brought up a bunch of my pages, and the Penalty Checker said I am not being penalized. I made a note of SEO Powersuite Professional, will look into that asap.

Still really wondering what may have happened that link:... (you know what I mean, being moderated there with http) is showing ZERO results

Hi BassTrackerBoats, definitely agree with that. The keywords are probably pretty hard, but potentially lucrative. Unfortunately, I am still in the very early stages of learning, and am at a loss as to what exactly causes our backlinks to be bad. I'll check out the services section, but again because I am so inexperienced, I'm afraid I may have a hard time telling what it is that I need at this point (Well, that, and the fact that I'm jobless too )

There is a lot of "unique" content, but it is really all spun by my own code (I just followed a freind's suggestion, no problem with programming it, not so lucky with knowing the science behind it). What do you mean by pinging content, btw? (See how outdated I am, I only know the original meaning of pinging, as in networking)

Are there turorials, books, articles that any of you could recommend? What are the first tools I need to become familiar with?

Well, to my shame, I am not using anything Or, rather, I tried using Senuke X (you know, the one that circulates) not surprisingly, with no results. (Ironically, this is how I found this site in the first place!) But I see the potential, and am willing to sign up once I know what I am doing. I did use TheBestSpinner with it, and I have some remaining credit with Deathbycaptcha. Making note of your tools. What made you end up with this list, and why only "shortly" with Xrumer?

Most importantly, though, is the sequence of actions, so to speak. As in, to properly promote a site, you:
a) Buld and launch it
b) Add (perefably unique) content - bam, first question - where do you get it, and does it have to be written by hand and readable and make some sense? IS that what Instant Article Wizard is for?
c) Promote it somehow - bam, second question - how, and in what sequence? Backlinks? Email blasts of some sort? What's that pinging and Web 2.0 about?
d, e, f... more and more questions

I apologise, its 4:15am, and im pretty tired, i meant shortly as in im going to be purchasing it shortly, IAW is used for researching your keywords and generating articles from them, i tend to use them just for ideas on what to write, then write it manually and then use BestSpinner to spin my articles, dont take this as the best way of using it, as I say im still learning

It cost me 5 month of reading and 3 domain for 0.02 usd , IM isnt a way of rose with tons of money . Just do it and dont give up . IM need ability of a SEOer + Web master + CEO , it's harder than work for money under someone , some company , or open a shop .
In IM , you are 1 and you are a company .

That makes me feel optimistic, as I guess I got at least one part covered, being the webmaster for two large corporations in the past 6 years or so
