[Noob/Beginner Guide] How to Improve Your Rankings with Basic Internal Linking Practices

Really good guide, but I still can't understand if a pixelated egg needs a PVA for more link juice or it'll stay alone in a marginal world.

Great guide!

You meant this one.

Since I implanted that silo structure I've gained 2-300 keywords in one week and my overall rankings went way up.

Thanks for the link. Might experiment with @splishsplash's setup -- looks promising.

Nice one. Way too many people underestimate internal linking. I would maybe also mention some related posts plugins, which, even though they do not link from body and thus aren't so amazing, can make the job done to some extent. :)

Related post plugins might be particularly nice for smaller sites where it's not necessarily worth it or useful to create a whole silo structure with distinct categories. Haven't experimented with those a ton but can certainly see the potential.

Oh yeah, relevancy's a whole additional topic that I'd like to experiment more with at some point.

great post, what about the internal linking from the yoast feature, any experience

The column that says like "number of internal links" on the posts page is useful at a glance and I do use that for sites that have Yoast installed.

Or maybe you're referring to:
Premium customers of Yoast SEO will now find a new box on the right-hand side of your site, called Yoast Internal Linking. This box shows a couple of links that are proven to be relevant to the text you are working on. It uses the most prominent words from the previously introduced Yoast SEO Insights tool to find posts that use the same words.

We all know the best links in your posts are the ones you pick out yourself. So now, after you’ve written a couple of hundred words, the related post tool will automatically kick in and give you linking suggestions. You can easily visit the link to check out the article or directly copy the link by clicking on the icon next to it. Or, if your browser supports it, drag and drop the link in your post. To use the internal linking tool, you need WordPress 4.7 or the REST API plugin.

It's potentially useful. Never tried it. Seems more for finding semantically relevant posts than it is for finding posts worth boosting with internal links.

Yoast has a "cornerstone article" feature, which I've also never really tested. That might be useful In terms of Yoast being able to help you with your internal linking. Although you'd have to tell it which articles are "cornerstone articles" and you do often have good reason to link to pages that might not really be "cornerstones."

Nice guide on interlinking, I was doing this a bit differently. Got some clarity now!

My interlinking is a bit complex and takes a lot of work, lots of revisiting old pages.

As in the example I'll create 1) Best HD TVs which will link to the smaller keywords like 2)Sony HDTV that are of value. I'll then revisit the smaller keywords and link bank to 1) and between them also.

I've always wandered if this applicable or I'm doing it totally the wrong way.

Maybe your comment will shed a light on what I'm actually doing, lol.

Sounds like it should be fine:
  • Parent article (Best HD TVs) links to child articles
  • Child articles (Best Sony HD TV, etc) include a link back to the parent articles
  • Child articles link to other child articles
Links into any of those articles should spread authority to the other articles in that same cluster.

If you're not already using categories to organize content, you might add those to make things clearer and to know what should link to what else.

Thanks, I do have categories but I only interlink the articles that fight for difficult keywords or those that are really relevant and the user will benefit from.

good guide for achieving over optimisation issues and stuck on on page 2.
but hey, it will sell good to clients.

Fantastic thread Matt. I think many people overlook the value of internal links and focus solely on external link building. I believe it helps with ranking, but I know it helps with the overall flow of the website and the experience of my audience. The more structured and organized it is, the easier it is for my readers to find what they are looking for, as well as for me to get them clicking where I need them to. Certainly a thread noobs should be reading. I appreciate you taking the time to create something so in depth.

Let's sit back and await your detailed guide then maybe?

Thank you for this guide. It was very helpful and clear.

I had 2 questions:

1. One of my client's website has home page (main keyword - ranking well already) and then 1 level down of pages related to the main keyword. That is how the whole website is structured. The site literally only has homepage as first tier and then site-wide sidebar navigation linking to rest of the 15 inner pages that are closely related to the keyword. Your bat example can be applied. So the site is about baseball bats and then inner pages are wooden baseball bats, aluminum baseball bats, etc.

Every inner page on the site has navigation sidebar which shows links to the rest of the pages related to the main homepage keyword.

The inner pages are generally ranking well... all on the first page... although they are not competitive kws.

Should I look into building out categories of the related products of the homepage or should i just focus on building internal links from pages to each other?

Even though the pages are very closely related to the homepage, they can still be potentially put in categories, realistically.

What approach should I take?

If building categories is a good idea, does the URL structure tell google that categories exist so juice and authority can flow? By that I mean, would the silo HAVE to be in this URL structure? --> Example www.baseballbats.com linking to -> baseballbats.com/wood/ linking to --> baseballbats.com/wood/cheapest-wooden-bats/

or can i get away with baseballbats.com/wood/ linking to ---> baseballbats.com/cheapest-wooden-bats/ directly and that would still count as proper silo?

The reason why I ask this is because I personally do not want the landing page urls of the keyword related pages to change as they are already ranking well. I hope you get my point. What are your thoughts?

Also, the site has no body links going anywhere to any of the pages currently. Just navigation sidebar links connecting the whole website.

2. Do you use keywords while interlinking in general or leave it natural anchors?

Thank you,
Excellent post about internal link.
One request is it would be great if you can help with an example of "Different ways to get backlinks"
