No Unique Content Yet Ranks Almost Every Term

I am referring to the quote site Brainy Quote. There is no original or unique content. All the content is available in the Internet. Yet, this site is ranked for number one in almost all the terms, like ability quotes, love quotes, etc. I don't think it is penalized by Google. It has lots of backlinks.
Can someone explain this?

Because the site was created in 2001 before the muppets with their junk sites started ruining the internet.

There are just some sites that have built up such aged trust that they won't be knocked down by the algo. That's why when Google wants to topple a few they have to release an update to target them.

It's all part of the game. Build authority, make money, get knocked down, someone else takes your place and you resort to adwords. Repeat in an infinite loop.

The domain age and high authority links for the site is the reason for ranking in the first.
