We'll make sure to quote you when we come out with the universal dictionary for all the world to follow. In the meantime, how about reading what others have posted and realizing that there really is more than one way to pronounce the word? :eek:

i pronounce it nitch. i have never heard anyone say it any other way.

You know I'm kidding, right? Honestly, we took the English language and basterdized it... adding a few (hundred) words from this language, a few (thousand) words from that language and there you have it... American English.

I remember once when I was working an informational kiosk in Orlando, FL giving away Disney and other tourist info, a person came up that only spoke Spanish and my Spanish was rusty at best. I pretty much gave him the info he was looking for and he went on his way. About 20 minutes later a Brit came by and I was telling him about the previous person, telling him, "it was funny... all he could understand was Spanish and I was speaking in a mix on Spanish and English..." and that was all I got out. He very LOUDLY interupted me saying, "You Sir do NOT speak English! I speak English, YOU speak American!". He was right, but I absolutely felt he was way over the top and a bit rude. I gave him his pamplets and he was on his way... lol

When I visited England (twice as a Sailor), I made sure to tell my friends to be careful if they refer to what language they speak... ;)

When I first looked at that word I said "nitch." I only learned of "neesh" when one of my friends pronounced it that way. It doesn't matter how anybody says the word. Everybody is different and either way is fine to me.
 
I only asked, because when I'm reading forums I like to wonder what country the author is from, and imagine how THEY would say it. And I know that niche is such a central word to most of our work on this forum, so I thought I would ask :)
 
I say nitch. I even deliberately keep saying nitch when other people in the room say neesj.

Because you're American and probably never been to Europe :)

If you said nitch in the UK or Europe they'd just stare at you with a blank face.

We have itch that needs to be scratched
We have snitch, pitch, glitch and even twitch

But we do not have anything that is pronounced nitch and spelt niche. :eek:
 
There's a services on here itchesforniches. It took me a awhile to get the pun as I was reading it as itches for neeshes LOL

isnt it a proper noun ? and there is no right or wrong way of saying it as long as you write it with the correct spelling :-)

but it is just socially awkward when you say it in a way that is not how other people living there would say a word

pretty much like Often - pronounced as OFTEN and OFFEN.
 
I'd say neesh.

In Dutch we use the same word for it. It's also pronounced as neesh in Dutch.

I myself hear both so I've gotten used to each. But I definitely see your point.
 
I always pronounced it as "neech", but then again I always pronounced cache as "catch" like catching data, until someone told me it was "cash". So I have no clue whats right or wrong.
 
Just place it on google translator and play the sound icon and voila!!!


NITCH!!!!
