I was just wondering, because I watched a video the other day that used 'Nitch' and I have only ever heard 'Neesh' before. Maybe this is a US pronunciation.

Google says: niche/niCH/
Oxford English Dictionary says: /niːʃ, nɪtʃ/ (what ever the F that means :) )

Lmao I was arguing with my friend over this. I said it's "nitch", he says "neesh".
 
Nitch... I'm sure some Brits say it Neeshe... :)
 
I never heard people saying 'Nitch'. Neesh is the way I think..
 
I'm pretty sure the word has french origins, so I would assume the 'correct' way is 'neesh'
 
Nich to get rich; beware of neesh, it panders to nouveau riche.

Nich gives you an itch, neesh is classy like a silk leash or a decadent quiche.

micro-nich sounds so...MidWestern(the bad kind)...and sounds much worse than micro-neesh

I think the pronunciation of these French-derived words depends on your philosophy. Pronounce it in your native language like it's spelled ("nitch" in English) or try to pronounce it the way it's pronounced in French ("neesh")

As the French pronounce every word like it's a French word, I tend to return the favor and mangle THEIR words.
 
I used to say it as nitch, but I kept hearing people say it as neesh so I got used to saying it like that as well.
 
Neesh is how I say it here in the UK.

I prefer Nitch though.
 
I always pronounce it as NIK Site .. I was pronouncing it wrong all along ? :(
 
I like 'neesh'; since Indian English is derived from British English, the neesh sound is common here. I fell of my chair when I heard 'Nitch' the first time, sounded funny.

Oh come on, not only the French do that.

America calls the country of Tunis - Tunisia and calls Italia - Italy. How did that happen? It's just an "f-off, we're going to intentionally call your country something else." Not to mention the country of "Spain," which linguistically, doesn't exist.

The only country we pretty much do pronounce correctly is France, which is ironic to your sentiment lol
 
The word France is spelled the same in French but is pronounced "frah[n]ss". The "ah[n]" is my way of writing the nasal a vowel found in words like grand, ange, and of course en and an. The R is like a light clearing of the throat, similar to "ch" in German. The end of the word is a simple smooth s sound, without the little t sound that we add in front in English.
 
It's a fucking French word and it's fucking Neesh! It's another American misinterpretation. Almost as dumb as when George Bush said that the trouble with the French is they don't have a word for Entrepreneur! LoL

Mind you, in the UK we say Fillet and Vallet not Feelay or Valley as they do in the US, so I guess there's no logic to this interpretation of French.
 
Canada (and I think almost every country other than America): Neesh

I don't mind Nitch so much, but can't stand when people pronounce clique as 'click'
 
I use to say nitch...now I say neesh....
