"For to be free is not merely to cast off one's chains, but to live in a way that respects and enhances the freedom of others." - Nelson Mandela

A true humanitarian. Rest in peace.

Yes, what I'm saying that he was a terrorist, and he was imprisoned for good reason. Those were two unconnected points. Being a freedom fighter would never justify murder. It doesn't work for Al-Quaeda so it can't work for Nelson Mandela. It's funny how those small details like mass murder get airbrushed out of history.

That, and his alliance with the Soviet Union in order to get weapons from them alienated his cause from the western world and may have delayed the dissolution of Apartheid.

I read the wikipedia article and see no reference to murder or terrorism.

Clearly you are commenting out of ignorance. I suggest you educate yourself a little bit more on his life and all he did before & after those events before making statements like this...

And yet you fail to make a single point here. I think it's more likely that it's you that is the ignorant cheerleader, blindly celebrating the life of a person that you know nothing about. You don't like having your illusions shattered, and so you attempt to suppress someone else's speech in an effort to remain ignorant.

Well the Wiki does tend to euologise everyone, quick to add praise and less to add criticism. Even though it is well documented and notable under their policies. Wikipedia is a joke, I only ever use it to find the references at the bottom.

Dead on and as to the haters stating that we are blind cheer leaders my family came from South Africa and I had a vested interested in seeing a peaceful resolution to the apartheid state. I for one was glad that South Africa did not degenerate into a vicious race war and we can thank Mandela for that. Like I said in my earlier post Mandela grew while he was in prison rather than turning into a rancid, bile filled hater monger like Hitler.

Yeah I was shocked to see no reference on Wikipedia to his support for armed resistance and his position as leader of the armed wing of the ANC.

The guy is no different to Irish republican terrorists who disarmed and engaged in the peace process.

Will these bandwagon jumping hero-worshippers mourn the passing of Gerry Adams and Martin McGuiness when they eventually leave this world too?

Mandela did a great many good things but at what cost? Those people killed during the armed struggle and South Africa today full of violent crime.

My deepest apologies, perhaps you could enlighten me as to the point I was supposed to make here? I guess I deluded myself into thinking that I had already made my point when I made the suggestion to EDUCATE YOURSELF.

I lived through the changes in the country, along with having family that were involved in the struggle, the army & police. I guarantee my 'cheerleader' attitude is not based in ignorance, and your sad little rants (on a thread paying respect to the man) have not shattered anything.

I have no interest whatsoever in getting into an argument or justifiying myself to some faceless genius on an online forum. Dont worry though, I'm sure your mom thinks you're as clever & funny as you seem to think you are. But I dont, and I wont be wasting anymore time on you...

Some people here are "paying respects to the man", while others are giving a more balanced perspective, and describing some of his history that does not get mentioned in the popular media, a history that has been suppressed for the sake of political and social expediency.

Leadership is by example, and so when someone demands that someone else "educate themselves", it's assumed that they are making the suggestion from a position of superior awareness. Given the "Yo Mama" comment, that's obviously not the case here. You seem to think that the standard for increased "education" doesn't apply to you. Perhaps you've been benefiting from affirmative action for so long that you believe that there are no standards that you are required to achieve, and that you can simply make things happen by making a childish and self-centered demand. I assume that when this fails to achieve desired results, you then resort to epithets, name-calling, social marginalization and accusations. All of these are distractions and a means of socially redirecting attention away from the true deficits that cannot be hidden here, in a universe comprised of nothing but text and intellect.

Disagree. There was no other choice. Here is where history shows the inevitable consequences of any other alternative.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rwandan_Genocide

When Belgian rule ended, most of the land and power were in the hands of Tutsi while the Hutu were in positions of forced laborers, or Akazi. The presence of the colonialists emboldened the ruling Tutsi against the Hutus, who then proceeded to independently embark on a genocidal massacre against their fellow countrymen when the Belgians started to give up power.[12] Following independence, the Hutu were in control and heavy violence between Tutsi and Hutu continued. Exiled Tutsi would attack from neighbouring countries and the Hutu government would retaliate with large-scale slaughter and repression of the Tutsi.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Idi_Amin

Amin's rule was characterised by human rights abuse, political repression, ethnic persecution, extrajudicial killings, nepotism, corruption, and gross economic mismanagement. The number of people killed as a result of his regime is estimated by international observers and human rights groups to range from 100,000[1] to 500,000.[2]

And finally, the inevitable conclusion:

The World lost a great man yesterday - but our loss is Heavens gain.
As a child I learned about his struggles against Apartheid, as an adult
I saw him rise to the Leader of a Nation.

God Bless You Nelson Mandela. You truly made the world we live in a better place.

So you are saying that what he did before he had those people murdered, and after he had them murdered, justifies murdering them?
I'm sorry, but where did I say that? I cant seem to find it, or anything of the sort...
