As far as I know Mandela pleaded guilty to 156 counts of public violence. He is the co founder of MK ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Umkhonto_we_Sizwe ) which killed many civilians in the name of "freedom". Used terrorist methods and condoned violence. If you want to fight against the goverment, fight the goverment and not innocent civilians.

One man's terrorist is another man's freedom fighter, as they say. Perhaps people don't realise there was an actual reason why he was in jail for so long.

I'm not sure what you're trying to say? That the death of many civilians was justified beause he was a freedom fighter in someone's eyes? He was in jail for so long because he was a terrorist, that's not refutable.

I believe what is important about Mandela is that while he was in prison he evolved and moved away from violence towards a peaceful solution, quite unlike the transformation that occurred when Hitler was in jail. One man grew while the other stewed in his own hate and bile. Mandela is not a saint but he does point to the fact that we can all continue to spiritually grow throughout our brief existence on this planet.

Yes, what I'm saying that he was a terrorist, and he was imprisoned for good reason. Those were two unconnected points. Being a freedom fighter would never justify murder. It doesn't work for Al-Quaeda so it can't work for Nelson Mandela. It's funny how those small details like mass murder get airbrushed out of history.

I remember his release from prison vividly. Why? My family was getting ready to survive a civil war.
In the months leading up to his release, my parents stocked our caravan with food & supplies in order to help us survive what was a very real fear for most South Africans, after what had happened in Rhodesia/Zimbabwe.

But he got out and preached peace & reconciliation. There would be no war. Throw your weapons into the sea...

A GREAT man, and there is a very good reason the world is mourning his death. RIP Madiba, you'll never be forgotten

So you are saying that what he did before he had those people murdered, and after he had them murdered, justifies murdering them?
