In that case you'll be good with the current monitor. Why all the extra specs of the monitor when you're not going to use them? You dont need the response time, the extra Hz of the monitor if you're not gaming. In that case just buy a cheaper one with good colors and stuff, maybe a big one 24' and up.

I'll tell what I have, and then tell you that it is starting to get long in the fang. You will probably tell me nonsense. I run a 600 watt power supply, MSI milspec G85-B43 Motherboard, 20 Gigs ram, 3 TB spinning rust, NVidia GTX 650 Ti GPU, I-7 4770K CPU, 16 TB NAS on a 1 GB network.

I do not game, but do use a lot of Virtual Machines. I do use the Cuda cores on the GPU though. Despite having enough ram, the OS still pages to the HD. Because of this, I may just switch that drive to SSD.


Under the desk, I have another quad core XEON powered computer from HP with similar specs. I have to parallel process some of what I do to it.

In my estimation, 16 GB ram is the minimum that you can get away with in a modern configuration.

If you are doing IM, then this kind of power is far too much! You can get away with a dual core i-7 or i-5 with 4 - 8 GB ram and an AMD or Nvidia low end GPU.

The cost of the two systems: The HP was about $6000, the parts for the I-7 ran about $700 2 1/2 years ago. The I-7 I assembled - a dog with thumbs or a monkey can assemble a computer. The hard part is matching the components, and of course, untangling the rats nest of cables in the CPU closet.

The next system, I build - probably in a year - will be that Dual Xeon E7-8890 above with whatever the current CPU is. The problem, if you are running canned software, is that most software is not written for multiple cores - and what is, is not generally written for more than 4 cores.

You can build a fast computer for $1000. That's with the newest I7 just released, 32gb ram, nice video card, ssd, etc

Probably not for 1k. Not i7, 32gb ram, ssd and a nice gpu. I can guarantee you that won't be possible lol. My i7-4790k costed me around $270 alone, and wasn't the newest i7 lol. For the intent he is planning to use, he doesnt even need an i7. A decent 4th gen or 5th gen of i5 will do just great, I can put my life on it lol.

With the Intel Core i7-6950X 3.0GHz 10-Core Processor at $1579.7 on the pc part picker, I can guarantee it as well.

But also, as you stated, the OP does not need something that powerful.

the prices vary a lot from place to place. I hardly believe he will find those parts for 1k, in India.
 
If you want to get the best of your money, I think you should search for used HP or Lenovo workstations, because of the high quality components like power supply and motherboard. The Xeons on those are usually pretty suitable for IM and if you add a good GPU, you will also be able to game decently. With your budget you will most probably be able to get a machine with 2 six-core Xeons which will allow you to do really a lot of things simultaneously. Like it wouldn't be a problem to let a video render while you have bots running and you working on other things without a hitch in the meantime.

Additionally, since it seems that you have the budget for this, I would strongly advise you to get a dual monitor setup. It will really increase your productivity since you will be able to look at more things at the same time which makes working more comfortable. Of course, your GPU needs to support that, but keeping your budget in mind, this shouldn't be a problem.

That processor isn't that good. You can get better for your budget I think. Also get the biggest SSD you can - best to keep everything on it if possible because read and write will be quicker.

Doing day to day stuff data reads and writes will slow you down before anything else.

Agreed, just did a comparistion to that cpu and i7-4790k, the 2nd one is way stronger. I suggest him take a strong i5.

Best to look on cpu benchmark. The i7 you mention first time is rated about 7600. But for reasonable budget you can get bit more powerful one I think.

Depends what you are gonna be using the pc for I guess.

Click on the link in my post. Its a core i7-7700k(the newest kaby lake 14nm cpu for $349.99) with 32gb ram, 480gb ssd, 1050ti 4gb gpu, for $1150. If you wanna use i5 you can build a good rig for way less.

Intel just released its new line of cpu for all i7, i5, i3, called kaby lake. They are all faster and more efficient than last years models, at basically the same prices.

Get the new 7th gen kaby lake cpu's whether you go for i7 or i5. Those 4th and 5th gen are too old already.
 
You can get something for much less you dont need to spend 3k unless your into heavy gaming.
 
Ok so I have finalized everything and I am going for the i7-6700 Skylake processor but I am confused with the motherboard. I am thinking of ASUS z170-A, do you guys have any suggestions for me?

Also should I go for DDR4 or stick with DDR3?
 
Also do I need to overclock my PC for using 2400mhz or 2133mhz RAM or what?

The first thing that strikes me for IM purposes is RAM. Because how poorly Firefox, Chrome are managing the RAM, I would give it a boost.
With a $3K budget you could go with a 32 GB DDR4 PC.
You might think it is too much and most of people will not agree with that. Yet, here I often go to the 24 GB of usage and sometimes more without running something specific (lot of small apps) and the pagesys file is disabled on the PC has well to save some write / read operations on the SSD to make it live longer.
The 8 GB free RAM remaining are pure confort.

CPU wise, I'm using this one for my office PC Intel Core i7-5820K, because of the 6 cores 12 threads which is great to do multiple tasks.
Don't fall for the Intel Core i7-5830K it doesn't add much but for gamers who wants 2 GPU.

No don't overclock your RAM, you won't notice a difference!

To choose a RAM you have 2 factors, it is easy. The frequency and the CAS (X-X-X-XX)

Pictures 4 circle, The frequency is the speed to go around the circles, while the CAS is the size of them.

So if you go with a lower CAS and slightly lower speed, it would still beat a higher freq. So pay attention to that.

Motherboard, I'm a Gigabyte fan and not much of an Asus one. But you know taste and colors..
That being said, I noticed that Gigabyte often have more features for the same price point. And, I had an Asus fried over a RAM Swap once so it doesn't get to receive my love ;).

Considering I have made my mind on the i7-6700..you said DDR4 and say the frequency is 1866 or 2133mhz...do I need to overclock the RAM?

Also can suggest me best DDR4 RAM for those frequencies?
 
Also should I go with 32GB( 2 into 16) or 32GB ( 4 into 8) RAM?

Someone suggested me dual channel so I am guessing 2 into 16?
 
Well it is always best to keep free slots for further upgrade so I would go with 2*16 on a 4 slots motherboard.
Here I have 8 slots so I'm on 4*8 GB.

RAM wise go with a 2133 mhz with the lowest CAS you can find in an acceptable price point (don't waste too much money on this though). CHeck whether your motherboard and CPU supports such speed (it will more likely but better be sure or it would be underclocked)
