Free bulk email modules might deliver most of the messages but they might not get delivered in the inbox. An economical API (check out Aadishesh on Google) could be an ideal solution for mass messaging. Its easy, fast and the messages get delivered in the INBOX and not the spam folder.
Instead of setting your own email solution, you should go with some online bulk software (e.g. UltraMail24) which is usually user friendly and you don't have to care about blacklisted IPs, FBL, mail server setup unless you're skilled user or have enough money to hire freelancer.

you can try the "Bulk EDM Chef" but take care about the issue that sometime bulk emailing go straight to spam box which can really waste your efforts

As I stated before, certain bulk sms providers will also help you out with a HLR service. This HLR includes comprehensive details about several potential customers in your region. You could look up the Aadishesh guys to confirm a thorough HLR for your region. You could PM me if you need the number.

Spaming a topic talking about spam.... oh the irony .
On another note I was thinking of doing a how to guide to set up your own mass email server would this is a welcome add-on or would it tread on the toes of some sellers?

Dejamatt has the best info for your sending behaviour in this thread - so i suggest you bear what he says in mind when you setup and start sending. That said, you will still need a system that can do the sending. I can help you with that, I have many systems running and available depending on your sending requirements. Here is a rough outline of the spec that you would need:
Multiple offshore servers (inc main server for data and sending servers - that way if sending server goes down you don't lose any data)
Multiple IPs on rotation - all C Level with a reputation of 90-100% - with 60 IPs you can send 500k - 1 million daily
Easy to use Interface
Then you will need someone to manage the Admin, Spam Complaints, IPs, Bounces, Reputation and to provide support and consultancy on your list management, sending and content to ensure that you keep the reputation of the IPs where it should be.

You need to refine your approach and think first before hitting the go button buddy. Sending 100000000000000 emails from your home ISP is a sure fire route to being banned from it. I remember reading a post from one of the UK's leading affiliate marketers (He's a TV personality too which is why he makes so much cash) and he emails a few million subscribers each week.
He has to tell ISP's well in advance of his emails unless they ban him accidentally. You don't have any of this ability which means they'll ban you - with no comeback and 100% no inboxing.
Why not take some of dejamatts advice, dude seems to know lots about sending bulk emails.
