My websites got hacked by...

If you were running Joomla, PHPnuke, or anything like that on your site then it is not because of popularity that they hacked you. I made a track and field website for a buddy of mine about a year ago using Joomla because it had some really awesome coach modules that tracked his kids performance, printed out graphs, etc. They just search for things like "powered by joomla" to find sites. They could care less whether or not its popular or abandoned. All they want is to exploit things using injection methods. It's a worthless hobby but they still enjoy it.

BTW removing version numbers will not help you. There are simple ways to find out things like this...whether they use programs or simply a few trial and error attempts.

Been hacked before. Big pain in the ass to fix it.....

Waste of time to go hacking, as there is no real monetary reward.

I am sure they do for the "fun" of it (as they see it).....

Sorry to hear about your experience.

There are scripts that you can run that will make them wished that they had picked someone elses sites.... :)

Care to share info about those scripts and where to get them? Did a quick search here and didn't come up wtih anything.

niche1,

I'd like to know more about these scripts too.

I do something like that, but for me its kinda game, just to fascinating my curiousity..most of hackers who defaced sites is a lame.. coz i can do more intereting game than defacing :D

Feel sorry for you. Last Christmas I had a miserable time as a few of my best blogs got defaced by someone who called himself Scorpion and in aid of the children of Palestine.

That itself was simple but after I moved host, I found out that they had done more than I thought. Apparently they were Russian as they used my sites to drop trojans and added links to porn sites. From a google check I found that many sites having the same host as me had the problem too including one .gov site. Now I'm really paranoid.
