What multilingual SEO approach have you found most effective for your business without requiring a full website rebuild, and what made it successful?
1. Subdirectories + hreflang tags:
Instead of rebuilding, we set up language-specific subdirectories (e.g., /es/ or /de/) on the same domain. With proper hreflang implementation, search engines could serve the right language version without duplicate content issues.
2. Smart translation/localization:
Rather than auto-translating everything, we focused on translating only the
high-traffic, high-intent pages (product pages, category descriptions, meta tags). Local keyword research made a huge difference — sometimes the “direct translation” wasn’t what people were actually searching.
3. Lightweight CMS plugins/tools:
For some clients, plugins like WPML (WordPress) or Weglot allowed fast deployment without new infrastructure. The key was keeping site speed and crawlability intact.
What made it successful was the balance:
minimal dev effort, but maximum local relevance. Rankings improved in target regions, and because we avoided a full rebuild, ROI was much faster.
