Moving to another country to work

I am planning to move to Japan in less than a year. It is one of the easiest countries to get work visa right now. (if you know some Japanese). I am an SE guy. There are some big tech companies there. (and IT companies don't require fluency in Japanese)

Don't get me wrong. I love IM. But I didn't study Software Engineering just to throw the degree away. I'd like to work 9-5 couple of years and see where it gets me (while doing IM of course).

I am from a 3rd world country in Asia. I don't have a lot of work experience (I'm still 23 years old). So getting a job abroad is freaking tough. (Who in their right mind is going to hire a fresher from a 3rd world country and go through the process of visa sponsorship and what not ?)

You Americans, Australians have it easy

. You have freaking holiday work visas and a ton of options.

I don't want to work in a company in my country to gain experience.

So my options comes down to Singapore, Japan, and few other countries where it is not that hard to get a work visa.

I chose Japan, coz I think it'll be challenging. I can make few bad decisions in my twenties.

Don't you think? I am moving alone btw.

What do you think? Feel free to share your experiences, advice, etc..

TLDR: I am planning to move to Japan for work? Anyone here has done $title? Do you think it is a stupid move?

Go for it. When you are young and you have less commitments its really the best time to just follow your dreams and go with your gut instinct. As you get older you get more ties and its harder to do this stuff.

And whats the worst that could happen? If you go there and it doesnt work out, you have still had that great experience. And chances are it WILL work out and it will probably be life changing for you.

Go for it man.
But for SE you can make a shit-ton of money in US/Europe as well while the companies pay for your visa if you are convincing enough.

Try to go for the Startup Scene - for companies who just raised money. CTOs in Silicon Valley are getting payed $100-150k.
A good platform to start looking is Angel.co

My Startup is Europe based and we are looking Engineers throughout the whole year. It is SO hard to find good people. So in my eyes, go wherever the hell YOU want to go.

Always do what you think is right for yourself. Dont let other people hold you back. You'll regret it later in life if you haven't atleast tried it.

I remember saying something similar to my Mother when I moved to Florida the first time and ended up working for a company that kept promoting me over and over again until I was sitting in the GM seat of a bottled water company with 8,500 customers, running a plant that shipped to 7 other locations + bottled for the 8,500 locals.

I like the thought process because you can always recover.

Worst case? You go back home none the worse for wear. If it's something you might enjoy then there's no reason not to go for it.

However.

Your line about not wanting to waste a degree caught my eye. I wasted four years getting my degree and I do regret it. Had I thrown more time trying to work with it I would regret it even more. If you like the work then great - I think go for it. If you're just doing it so it doesn't "go to waste" I'd maybe consider some alternatives.

That said, sushi tastes great.

I did the same when I was 19 years old! from a third world country, applied to a university in Italy (Just to get visa and travel)
now I'm here in Italy for 2 years, enrolled in a university, do some exams every once in a while to keep my residence permit in Europe.
Less stress, I can work online as much as I can without any interference from society (Family & friends). and for sure explore the world!

Although, I'm self independent.. so living in Italy with my own costs me like 500/600 Euros per month. which is like %30/%40 of my online income. But I don't care that much because living alone in a different country gave me happiness & more freedom!

Japan is probably the better option if you only have Japan and Singapore to chose from.

Someone told me a while back - what do you have to lose? You know you're going to be working somewhere so why not take a chance. If you like sushi you're good to go.

You might even find a hot japense chick who will end up being the love of your life.

This is a good question. I'd love to make money from home and travel the world whenever I want to. I will get there eventually. But for now, I think this will put me outside of my comfirt zone and help me grow as a person.

I know man. But getting a visa sponship for one those countries is hella hard as I have no experience. May be , I'll try to find some jobs in EU/US once I have some experience working in Japan.

I love programming. It has its ups and downs. But I don't hate working as a SE. I completely understand what you saying.

Yes, this was my initial plan. To go on a Student VISA (masters or Ph.D.) and do IM. But after spending months thinking, I changed my plan. BS degree is enough man. I am not in a mood for a PHD.
