Moving From WIX to cheaper alternative advice PLEASE! [newbie]

Hi Guys

I have a friend who owns a small business in a local location, currently, they are spending stupid amounts on a pretty shitty website. ( i think $250 - $300 per annum for domain + hosting on WIX ) now looking for some advice.

They are financially struggling this year, so need the cheapest solution possible, I offered to help but am an amateur with websites, ( I can create on elementor, using astra theme )

Question 1: Say they are on WIx now, If i was to make them a WordPress based site, what is the cheapest or best deals you guys know about?

Question 2: Is it straight forward transferring the domain from Wix to the new site?\

Any advice would be really helpful

There may be some small work for someone in this, but wont be a money maker.

End game is I would like to see them paying a normal amount for the size of the business and large amounts of local traffic ending up there

Checkout Namecheap. They are offering hosting discount to pay half of the original price for one year.

You cannot easily transfer a site from Wix to another web host. The sites on Wix are built with their proprietary sitebuilder. You would need to get linux shared hosting on another web host and install wordpress and then recreate each page in wordpress.

The problem you are going to have is that you can't have two sites with the same domain name. There are different ways of accomplishing what you want to do, but this is what I would do.

If you want to do this, I recommend the following to make it easier and minimize site downtime.

1. Go to Namecheap shared hosting and get their Stellar plan which is $15.44 for the first year and allows you to host 3 websites. You would need to buy an additional domain name to use as a working area domain and use that domain name as the site that you are hosting on Namecheap.

2. Install Wordpress on your new account for the domain name that you just purchased and install wordpress and reproduce the original site on this temporary domain.

3. Once you get it looking like the original site, you need to make a complete back up of the site. For this, I use the managewp site, but you could use some sort of duplicator wordpress plugin to make a complete backup of the site that you just created in wordpress.

4. Now you are ready to move the domain name to the new location. So add the original domain name to your hosting account at Namecheap as an add-on domain name since you are allowed three.

5. Point the nameservers to the nameservers for the domain at Namecheap and allow it to propagate which might take a day or two. you would just need to log into your friend's account at the domain registrar where he purchased the domain name and point the nameserver information to the nameserver information provided by the namecheap.

6. Restore the backup of the site that you created on Namecheap to your the new location on Namecheap. (I like using ManageWP because they have a clone feature built in that only costs a couple of bucks and they have great tutorials.)

7. Once you have all the files transferred to the new location, you are ready to go.

8. You can use the domain that you purchased to use as a working area for another permanent site now, so pick a domain name that you might want to use for another website.
