Mobile Update -- Waste of time?

One of my big earner sites is a very small site. The entirety of its traffic is from buyers keywords. So, I assume that all of my sales are from desktop pc's simply because of that -- though I do not use G analytics so I cannot tell.

Anyway site is ranking #1 which means I haven't touched it in ages because I never like messing with a #1 ranking.

So I am wondering if updating my free wordpress.org theme to the pro version (mobile friendly) is worth it? While I don't think a theme update would tank the rankings; you never know, it may cause some fluctuations. And of course the difference between #1 and #2 is a lot of money.

You may just want to update to a mobile theme for better conversions. Most non-mobile themes look like s*** on smarthphones etc., and even if you did experience a slight drop, you could always just do a little link building to bring it back to the top.
 
Update to a mobile theme, im starting to see websites go up and down in the past 2 hours or so. It might be the update kicking in.

all my website are 100% responsive

At this point, you might as well wait for the mobile update to roll out and see how you're affected. Even if you update it now, you'll probably still see an effect from the mobile rollout since your site wasn't mobile friendly when Google rolled out the update.

The good news is that if you are affected, by all accounts this isn't going to be like Panda/Penguin where you have to wait a year to see if you can get the penalty lifted, its a change that's going to be baked in to the Algorithm.

So if you are affected significantly, just update your theme, wait for Google to recrawl, then you should be fine.
 
There are free wordpress plugins that you can install to make your site mobile friendly. I installed them on all my sites. Pretty easy to update.

Yeah, if you are a WP guy the update should not be an issue with all the plugin choices that are out there.

To me that is what makes sense for most site owners that are using that CMS.
 
I have a ton of 1-2 page microniched sites in an "old" niche (most of the sites were built 4-6 years ago) that are all plain, "build them in notepad" html sites.
I'm going to wait to see what happens - but trying to make all of those sites mobile-friendly is going to be a nightmare. I wish there was a way for G to use common sense and not paint all sites with a broad-brush; old, valuable sites aren't going to be mobile-friendly by definition. However, I shudder to think I even used "G" and "common sense" in the same sentence.
 
no it wasn't a bounce. Just the mobile theme I used converted everything really badly. The bounce rate went through the roof. Its an image based site and the homepage and category pages are gird style which makes the site more clickly and obviously my users prefer this non friendly site lol.

I have experimented with mobile plugins and themes and they never preform that well for me on this site. Fewer clicks to adsense and less page views.
 
How can anything be a waste of time when it guarantees you spot in a search index?

I can't see how optimizing your website will affect your ranking negatively. If I were you I would update.
 
did google made it april 21 update? haven't noticed it and no one is talking about it.
 
try creating a mobile version or outsource it, its worth the effort. If you are not hit now you may get hit later.
