[Method] STEP by STEP Keyword Research for Newbies

I dont look at all those other stuff.


The main one I look at is "keyword in quotes" without the inrul or intitle stuff.

If a keyword shows under 100K results when typed in "quotes" and get a few thousands exact searches then I would go for it.

OK. So much conflicting information that it's confusing for newbies like myself. What's the minimum of exact searches you'll be happy with, also global or local?

Just one question, can you put your keyword in a URL if it is on a blog post or on squidoo? I know i'd probably find this out if i went ahead and made the thing but i just want to know before I pick my key word, thanks!

Not sure if this was discussed in the thread earlier or not.
There are 2 types of keywords: "Buying keywords" and "General Keywords". For people looking to monetize their websites, its important to differentiate between these 2 types of KWs. ImNRE's method is very powerful. But I think that the limit for inurl or intitle would vary depending on which category this keyword belongs to.

Thats a really good point Sand1000, you should always go for buy keywords when ever possible, they get more clicks (but less searches) - they convert more for adsense/amazon sites.

Again, I dont really look at the intitle/inurl stuff. I just look at the "keyword" in quotes and if the number is less than 100k I would say its pretty easy to rank for.

This is really helpful OP but how do you find your keyword in the first place, everything seems to have been done. The main part I am struggling with is find the keyword in the first place, any tips?

So if I'm understanding this correctly even though I've found a keyword with high global and local search volumes, low SEO competition using the intitle and inurl tricks on google because it's not a buying keyword it probably won't make any difference as most people searching for it won't be looking to buy anyway?

The keyword is what someone would search if they were looking for information, it's a health supplement and the keyword is like this for example healthsupplementbenefits.net.

I'm getting a strange result from google.com. When I search for my keyword inurl I get 738 results, intitle I get 1,390 but when inurl and intitle it comes back with 18,000. Is that even possible, surely if there's only 738 matches in the url and 1,390 in the title, both together can't be higher? Can someone clarify that for me because I'm either doing something completely wrong or misunderstanding!

You just need to put a seed keyword ... to find seed keywords I use Amazon, I use Ezinearticles, articlebase, tv, real life. You can get an idea of a product or thing from anything and everywhere. Just keep your eyes open.

Google does that some times Dont worry too much.

Like I have been saying lately. I only look at "keyword" in quotes.

Just because its not a buyer keyword does not mean it wont make you money.

The name of the game here is TEST.

Do tests and see how a keyword that gets 10K searches that is a buyer keyword stacks up against a keyword that is research keyword that get the same amount of traffic.

You should add new content to your site often to get the search engine bots to crawl your site and visit your site often. It does help on overall ranking of your site. Its up to you if you want to research the keywords to write about or not.

Don't go over the top with the on page seo though....

+rep for a truly helpful post. Before this my keyword research tactics were pretty hit or miss, but after one session of trying out these tips I am starting to see patterns that I would have missed before.
