Don't you just LOVE that Google hid the exact search volumes of keywords in Keyword Planner?

...and gave us beautiful "ranges" instead. I'm talking about these guys:

pOgGTV0

You can just FEEL the Love they have for SEOs, can't you?

And only way to get rid of it is to PAY....... or is it?!

Here's how to...

Make Keyword Planner show you exact search volumes

It is very quick and straight forward.

The whole trick is that instead of using Finding Ideas tool (which 99% of SEO are using), we're going to use Forecasts tool with max CPC.

Now, Finding New ideas is cool tool when searching for, well, new ideas but not so good for search volumes because of the above.

1. Go here:

https://ads.google.com/aw/keywordplanner/home

...and and select Get Search Volume and forecasts

2. Insert your keyword and click Get Started

3. Enter maximum allowed CPC.

fFGySJh

This will allow you to see performance of the ad that is (almost) always shown

4. Select date range

I suggest you got for the next 30 days. Actually, the next calendar month from 1st to 30th.

5. Take note of the Impressions

0Wqvl6u

Impressions = how many times the Ad is displayed to the users.

Since our CPC is so high (the highest) our potential ad would be displayed almost always when users search for the keyword. The whole month!

In other words, showing us exact number of searches users perform!

TIP: Use exact match search type

Default match type is Broad and that can be inaccurate as it included synonyms, typos, words in front and back and who knows what else.

Exact Match type reduces these to a minimum and pretty much shows you only volume of the phrase you enter.

To use it put your keyword into brackets [ ]

Example:

Broad:
Code:
search engine optimization

Exact:
Code:
[search engine optimization]

This shows different data compared to Ahrefs, Most of the keywords I searched has 0 impression. Does that mean it has no searches at all?

Nice one.

I long ago abandoned the keyword planner in favor of tools like Ahrefs.

Would you say third party tools like Ahrefs and Semrush are effective when it comes to getting accurate search volume?

Nice share. The exact match tip is good, Will help to create some ad campaigns.

Absolutely genius now I hope this is the last keyword research guide I have to come across on this forum :)

I'm glad you like the Tip guys :)

Interesting technique, this is a new addition to the new look and feel, before Google had on a separate page the keyword tool and now you have to have an adwords account to use this features.

Yes, but with this you don't have to have any ads running.

Good job, now they'll fix it...

Indeed lol

I suggest you refresh and start your campaign anew.

Also, some very low search volume keywords show 0 impression. Ones below 100.

I would say:

Keyword Planner > Ahrefs > SEMrush

I use Ahrefs for traffic estimates myself. SEMruush can be waay off sometimes (many times)

Yea, I’ve had the same experience with Semrush. I tend to use it to unearth paid keywords.

Great share. Have you ever tried Keywords Everywhere chrome extension? How accurate is it when compared with Ahref or GKP?

Good job, now they'll fix it...

My only question is, how would they fix this?

It's in Google's best interest (money) to show this data. If a company is the top bidder willing to bid up to $45 per click, then what reasoning would Google have to hide their impression metrics?

Interesting thing you might notice, the impression values change for the identical keywords every time you "refresh" basically.

1) An example, add keyword1 to your list, note keyword1 impressions.
2) Then add keyword2 to your list, note keyword1 impressions have changed.
3) Then remove keyword2 from the list, leaving you with only keyword1, and note keyword1 impressions are different from both Step 1) and Step 2) values.

I'm not sure what to think of this, other than perhaps the values are being polled from realtime data, or that the real values are intentionally altered before display.

I'm kind of skeptical that its realtime data because for a tool like that it would likely incur heavy processing load, so it makes more sense a static value would be cached and updated every X-minutes/hours/days.

I've also seen the CTR values fluctuate on identical keywords every time.

The "good thing" I guess is that the values generally tend to stay close to eachother for the most part, so if its 1,200 then it might go down to 979 or up to 1,387. Nothing extreme like 134 -> 10,000.

Any thoughts on this, OP?

That's for this tidbit . I'll use it next time I'm looking for keywords for my travel blog

Yes, I have tried it. Looks like Keywords Everywhere shows keyword historical data as if you were paying Google Ads customer

Nice guide, thanks! I usually just use Keywords Everywhere plugin

Yes, that works well too. But it's not as accurate. It works with Historical data while Forecasts create predictions.

Yes, that is correct. Quote from Google:

Your forecasted impressions take your bid, budget, seasonality, and historical ad quality into account to estimate future performance.

This and your experiment indicate that results are indeed real-time. Or at least "mimic" real-time

As for adding multiple keywords...

They influence each other. Especially if they are closely related.

Even if you add the same keyword with different match types. Like:
search engine optimization
[search engine optimization]

... you'll notice the impressions will be divided.

Tiberius rocks as always!

You rock too! ;)

Yes, that works well too. But it's not as accurate. It works with Historical data while Forecasts create predictions.

There must be some element of historical data used to generate these forecasts though, especially looking forwards in time. Maybe pulling from Google Trends or similar?

Wow. Thank you so much.

You're welcome, glad you like it.

Yes there is. According to Google this is what they work this:

Your forecasted impressions take your bid, budget, seasonality, and historical ad quality into account to estimate future performance.

Beautiful Trick! Thank You For Sharing.

Just hope that this stays long enough.
