It seems the better thing is just don't do business in Malaysia until they change. They are basically telling people that they don't want their business anyway.

If they want to be part of the modern world economy, they also need to lightened up and not believe in bullshit. If a tourism minister in any modernized nation said that he or she would be fired very quickly and wouldn't be able to get a decent job again.

an act some in the country blamed for causing a deadly earthquake.

lmfao for sure thats what caused it

and who the fuck goes to a foreign country to do that I

While it's crazy that Malaysia did this, the fault rests largely with the tourists - they should have done their research when traveling. Malaysia is a country that is very reserved, especially when it comes to decency laws and nudity. You can't assume that your homeland's culture, beliefs and laws apply around the world. They really should have known better.

Tourists were asked not to strip naked on the mountain by their guide; they proceed to strip naked and get in trouble. Problem?

You should always be respectful as a guest, especially in a foreign country.

I've been to Malaysia before, and given the opportunity I would gladly visit again, the fact a bunch of idiots got in trouble for breaking the rules does not dissuade me at all.

I'm pretty sure they lost more money than the $1,330 fine they gave them, since people are going to be less likely to visit a country that goes that insane over some nudity.

Your definition of "insane" is 3 days in jail and a $1,330 fine? Because some idiot western tourists wanted to drop their pants on a sacred mountain?

I'm a westerner, and atheist, but I fully support what Malaysia did. If I went walking around the US naked I'd be locked up too. It is somehow "modern" to show your penis in public? I don't go biking or running in local parks to see penises. I certainly don't take pictures of myself naked them post them on social media.

To hold Malaysia to any other standard is to create a double standard.

In fact, I think a move like this would be more likely to increase tourism.

There are a lot of old, retired westerners with $$$ (like my parents) who are sick & fucking tired of the way Americans act when traveling to other countries. I'm personally sick of the bullshit myself. When I went to Puerto Rico, Bermuda, St Martiin, etc 2 years ago with my family... (these weren't even eastern countries) I was EMBARRASSED to be American.

Our ship was full of Americans ages 18-30 who would walk off the boat drunk or high as hell, vomiting on streets in broad daylight, laughing about it, running around tackling each other, flashing, etc.

Seemed like 20% of the locals would target these people to sell shit and awkwardly laugh with them. Most people would try to ignore it. Then a small % would shout at them. I saw many shop owners grabbing Americans just to drag them off their property. Americans getting kicked out of stores & casinos one after another. Some westerners make a game out of this shit when traveling. They'll literally place bets to see who can get booted from the most bars and casinos. And they will congratulate each other afterwards.

It's not like I'm against partying or having fun. I went to multiple adult night clubs with my brothers as our parents went off to the casinos. But I made it a POINT not to act like a fucktard or PUT MYSELF IN A POSITION where I could get ARRESTED IN A FOREIGN COUNTRY. Getting arrested in my own country is 1 thing but getting arrested in Puerto Rico, Mexico, Thailand, anywhere else but my homeland.... that shit is scary.

When you're in a foreign country you should be happy but reserved. You're experiencing new and beautiful things. A completely different culture. That shit is awesome. Now imagine you're on some sacred mountain. You know it's sacred (if you don't, you're an idiot). At what point does it become a good idea to whip your dick out and start taking pictures?

When you get to the peak of the mountain? It's not enough to maybe just hug your friends and take some normal pictures? You gotta spread your legs with your ass hanging out then post that shit on social media?

One last thing. My parents just got back from Aruba last weekend. They're addicted to cruises now that they're retired. But their last trip was the FIRST TIME ever they intentionally decided to go on a "senior cruise ship". I've seen them come back from many trips but when they came back last week I've never seen them so happy.

tl:dr - Go Malaysia. I'll be checking prices on trip advisor next month. :)

edit: GG got in before I did. Agree 100%.

Agree with GoldenGlovez on this - the mountain is a sacred (i.e. holy or religious) place to the locals.

Imagine if some Asian tourists came to the USA and started stripping of in a war memorial - one of the arrested tourists also pissed all over the place as well - so image someone going to a US war memorial, stripping off, and pissing all over it.

Would people feel quite so liberal then? I think not.

You'd think the same of them as they think of these tourists - a bunch of rude, ignorant savages who disrespect something sacred so they can put some photos on Facebook.

Morons.

100% agree with you. These faggots should have got jailed for much more, not just for 3 days. Shame on Malaysia for letting them out so fast.

When in Rome, do as the Romans do.
These people were obviously looking for trouble...

been reading about this as well, all tourists are advised the mountain
is a holy place, so in theory u should respect that place just the same
as if they visited a holy place in your country . no issue just common
sense

Perhaps i'm too Americanized, but I don't see the big deal. Not saying this is the way I'd act but you're on the edge of some pretty intense view, what's the difference if you're nude or clothed ? can't one argue you are more spiritually aligned nude? ... now if they went and defecated on the place and laughed about that'd be a different story.
What does being "Americanized" have to do with this? I was born in the US and I think it's wrong. Going nude in a place that doesn't want it is disrespectful. People should respect the country they're in.

Ofc its going to affect tourism, its the same with Dubai, many people that would consider Dubai aren't going there over anti-fun rules.

Gosh, Dubai is one of the top 10 places I want to visit and many of the people that I interact with feel the same. It is a beautiful country with very cool architecture, beautiful scenery, museums and it is world renown for the shopping.

You think people have an issue because you have to dial it back for a week or so while you are there to show respect to their customs and laws?

That sure sounds like some self centered {person|people}.

The mountain guide already asked them not to strip there, and they answer with "go to hell". On their Facebook profile, this guys are really looks like a frequent traveller. Idk why the fuck they can't respect cultures from different place. It's simple, they didn't follow Malaysia's law, so they were fined $1330 usd.

About some people said that earthquake caused by they're naked (not respecting mountain spirit). Although I'm not really agree with this, but most Sabah people do believe in this mystical stuff. Doen't matter if the world believe in it or not, they didn't ask you to suck the spirit's dick. Just follow the rules, adapt with the cultures. It's that simple.

Yeah the simple minded dingbats believing in such nonsense, us westerners know better than that, they should join a church instead and worship our sky fairy.

Everyone knows that believing in that kind of stuff will result in your being sent to Hell where the devil will stick red hot pokers up your bottom for all eternity.

They're so backwards.

Maybe you should learn to respect other people beliefs. Plus, it's not like they believe in a bad thing. If I were naked inside your house with my friends, would you be okay?

Just don't eat a bagel with some poppy seeds or you could end up arrested when you try to leave.

Possession of painkillers like codeine and some cold and flu medication could result in a mandatory four-year prison sentence, Fair Trials International said.

In one of the most extreme cases, it reported a man being held after poppy seeds from a bread roll were found on his clothes.
