I have written a content focusing a long tail keyword, and its ranking around page 5 and I have also included secondary keyword in the same articles and it's ranking around Page 2.
Can I target the same secondary keyword in the new article?

Target the one which has more audience and low competition.

Yes, you can use it for a new article and also there is a chance for your two articles to compete with each other if the intent is the same. I suggest use variation in it.
