Hello,

I purchased what used to be a “premium” expired domain with several years of history and a solid backlink profile, mostly pointing to the homepage. These links were clearly visible in Google Search Console when I first acquired the domain, which was completely blank at the time.

Since then, I’ve added what I consider high-quality, relevant content across the site. Everything seemed to be moving in the right direction — impressions and clicks were climbing steadily.

Then, out of nowhere, traffic dropped by about 95% overnight. After digging through GSC, I noticed something strange: all backlinks have disappeared. Nothing shows up under “Links” anymore.

Has anyone experienced something similar after working with aged or expired domains? Could this be a devaluation, delayed penalty, or some kind of link recalculation? Would love to hear if anyone’s gone through this and managed to recover. There is nothing to see under manuel actions etc.

Thanks.

95% drop in traffic means your site got hit with algorithm penalty. This don't appear under manual penalty is more difficult to resolve, you need to figure out which google update(s) hit your site.
You home page might have got deindexed hence loss of all homepage backlinks.

Yes, its common with expired domains. Google often recalculates link value or drops old backlinks if the content or intent changes. Its not always a penalty - just a loss of trust or relevance. Focus on rebuilding topical authority and backlinks.

This is common with expired domains now. Google often re-evaluates old backlinks and may devalue or completely drop them if they no longer look natural or contextually relevant to the new content. GSC stopping to show links doesn’t always mean they’re gone, just that Google may not count them anymore. It’s usually not a penalty but an algorithmic trust reset. The best move is to build fresh authority links and slowly push relevance back. Treat the domain like a new site but keep leveraging the old structure where possible.

Google may re-evaluate expired domains and discount old backlinks, especially if ownership or content has clearly changed. It’s likely a link reset or trust recalculation. Focus on building fresh, relevant backlinks and continue adding quality content to recover.
