Hi guys, I'm wondering if it's possible to use a tool like adwords keywords tool to know something about local searches.
I know that there is an option for local searches, but it shows results for a country and language, is there something more specific, like the searches made in a certain city? I'm messing with local businesses and their results in the google places tab, and I need to know how many searches are made for a specific places, like a city. Is that possible?

To my knowledge, this data is not publicly available. Think about it: how do search engines know where searches come from? IP addresses. These are not specific to the cities where people are, they depend on where service providers have their equipment.

Accurate data might be available from mobile devices that store GPS locations. If you are interested, do some research into mobile search locations. Better still, create an app relevant to your niche and start collecting data!

do you mean like add words express or google local that gives you a good idea in a city its really good if you are offering a service for example being a dentist. I used it about 3 year ago it was free and took a little time to rank getting it right is the hard part and really helps if your in a city rather than a town. it worked pretty well for laptop and computer repair but i got too much work.

I just use the Google KWT and just add keyword+city name

The numbers are always a little low.

Just to give you an example for one of my niches KWT shows only 80 searches a month but I get over 100 phone calls and 700 visitors a month which is a LOT for this particular niche as its very high converting.

the new adwords keyword planner will let you put in the Neilsen/DMA area and see searches in a specific area. Must have adwords account to use it. Try it, you will love having this insight into local search volume. Keyword plus location only tells you who searches for keyword plus location and it was a workaround when there was nothing better. Now there is something much better!

As knockoutlocal mentions, using the keyword+city name will probably get you what you are looking for. I don't think its common knowledge that Google is really good at delivering localized results without the inclusion of these terms so people (when looking for something that is near them) tend to use the city name they are in so they can get results that are relevant to their location.
